Hi! I specifically said "Harvard" but it really does apply to any ivy league schools.

I'm currently a sophomore in high school and I took Geometry as a freshman, when I could take it in 8th grade. My middle school counselor messed my schedule up so I ended up taking Algebra 1 in my eighth grade. It's when I first came to America as well, so situations were pretty hectic and I had no time to pay attention to my math class. I really regret not fixing my schedule. All the "smart" kids who are planning on getting into top 20 colleges took Algebra 2 or PreCalculus as freshmen, and I am worrying if that's a standard for top colleges. Do you think my chances of getting admitted decreased while I was being held back in math one year? just a reminder, I'm Asian and I think math standard for Asians are considered to be high.

Just as a note, I have no hard time getting A's in honors math classes.

My school doesn’t allow freshmen to take anything past Geometry, and people have gotten into MIT, Brown, Princeton, Caltech, U Chicago, Penn, Northwestern, etc from my school with just taking Geometry as a frosh.
If you’re that worried… you could take a math course in the summer and get ahead. Or even self-study.

So basically, YES, you can.

Pre-calculus as a freshman? Holy cow, I’m taking that right now as a junior, and at our school its mostly a senior class. Just curious, what do you do after you take AP calc as a sophomore?

Our school lets you take geometry and algebra 2 at the same time, ask your counselor if you can do that. I don’t think its a big deal, as algebra 2 doesn’t use any geometry really, and geometry doesn’t use any real algebra 2 ish concepts.

when you are done with AP calc as a sophomore, you take math classes at local college. I’m a sophomore taking algebra 2. I’m already done with geometry… which is a bummer :/

Why is it a bummer that you are done with geometry? Which math classes will you be taking the next two years? Pre-Calc and Calc? What else would you be taking you sr year?

Your math classes are fine as they are for any top college, lack of an additional Calc class will not make a difference, but you can always take pre-calc at a local college this summer and qualify to take calc as a junior, if that makes you feel better.

sometimes curriculum can be extremely out of control…

For me, the math schedule look like this:
Fresh- Math Analysis Honors (which is Pre-Calc + Calc AB)
Sopho - Calculus BC
Junior: Multivariable calc at community college
Senior: Linear Algebra at community college

I don’t like math that much, but able to study in community college made up for it.

thank you, but the thing is that if I do that, my school won’t let me take AP Cal BC. In my school, teachers only let you when you did a satisfying job in Honors Precalculus. (which is notoriously hard in my school; most dropped class in the school).

The short answer: Yes, even if you’re “only” taking AB as a senior.

you’ll be fine. taking geometry as a freshman won’t hinder your chances. many people who go to top schools do that. don’t worry about it.

wow. its fine. people in my school have gotten itno harvard, northwestern, stanford.
and normally people take geom was a freshman…
