Can I still get student loans if I transfer schools?

I was getting federal loans from my old community college I was attending, but I missed out on this semester due to a family emergency. I decided to transfer schools and starting classes again this fall. While at my last school I was meeting the SAP requirements and was never put on academic suspension or dismissal. Couple of days ago I got an email saying Since I’ve been out of school or enrolled half time I owe money by this September. Since I plan on starting school again and haven’t been officially out of school yet can I still receive student loans?

Who sent you this info? Do you mean you need to start paying on your student loans? Or that you owe $ to your former school?

The student loan financier emailed me. Saying I needed to start paying back my loans. They must think I’m out of school already cause I wasn’t enrolled this semester. Also last semester I only received one bad grade, but it wasn’t enough to knock my GPA down.

Um, you ARE out of school because you didn’t go to school last semester and thus your grace period began when you left school (or fell below 1/2 time). My daughter took a semester off to do an internship not through her school and she’s been receiving notices that her loans will go out of the grace period and into a repayment status. She’s going to restart in August so her loans will again go into an ‘in school’ status.

Since you are changing schools, you will have to have your current school certify you are at least a half time student.

If you last attended class in December, the grace period of 6 months would end in June, if it was a Perkins loan the grace period is 9 months so it makes sense they would say it ends in September.

If you register for classes again for fall that should reset everything, but you might have to notify the loan servicer that you are attending school again, or the school will notify them, find out from the FA office what needs to be done because I’m not sure.
