Can I Still Major in Spanish Despite Not Taking AP Spanish in High School? Will It Look Bad if I Do?

So I'm a sophmore in high school and I took Spanish 1 this year and I love the language so much that I'm considering majoring in it, but because I started Spanish kind of late (I started as a sophomore instead of a freshman), I know that by the time I'm a senior I won't be in AP Spanish, instead I'd be in Spanish 3. Should I not major in Spanish because I have limited preparation in Spanish prior to college?

You don’t have to know what you’re majoring in yet. Spanish may get harder for you as you go along, or you may decide that yes, you still love it as a senior as much as you do as a sophomore. Don’t pick your major two years in advance. Tons of things could change.

Give yourself some time to actually commit to choosing Spanish as your major, as the person above me said. If you’re not a native speaker, Spanish takes a lot of dedication to master. In college if you choose to major in Spanish you will most likely study Spanish literature and linguistics, so you have to be willing to read Spanish that is written in old Spanish (like Shakespearean English only… well, Spanish). Also you’ll probably have to study phonetics and the history of the Spanish language. If it is really what you are passionate about come your senior year, do not shy away from it. I am graduating this year and majoring in Spanish, it is the best decision I have ever made :)

As far as not taking AP Spanish in high school, I don’t think it’s really an issue. Depending on the college you go to, you could possibly get out of one or two introductory Spanish courses having taken up to Spanish 3. I took both AP Spanish Language and Literature and have gotten 12+ credit hours for both tests, so it definitely put me at an advantage and if I dropped my Latin American Studies major, I could probably finish in two years. But like I said, give yourself time to decide if it’s really what you want to do. Hope that is helpful :relaxed:
