I'm applying to Phillips Academy Andover, and I got a not-so-great 85th percentile on the SSAT's (Almost 800's in Math and L.A, but Reading pulled it down).

Today I took the SAT's to apply for the CTY John Hopkins award. If I earn the award and get a good score on the SAT's, can I submit this score to Phillips, too? It's after the submission deadline already, but I'm not sure if I can submit this as a supplement.

Thanks for reading, and thank you to anyone who takes their time to reply. :)

It depends on what grade you’re in, I’ve read that if you’re applying for 9th or 10th, they prefer the SSAT, but if you’re applying for 11th, 12th, or PG then they prefer the SAT. I recall reading this on the site, but I’m sure you can check in the Admissions section. It always helps to call, too! Hope I helped :)

Thank you! I’m in grade 8 at the moment and applying for freshman year. I sent an email to Phillips, but they sent me an automated reply saying that it might take longer for them to respond since they’re looking at applications. I kind of want to get this answered ASAP though, because it’s already past the deadline and it would be best to submit it (if I can) so they put it into consideration with my app.

Edit: Also, I already sent in my SSAT scores, I was wondering if I liked my SAT scores if I could submit that too as a supplement? Thanks!

Hmm…I recall one of the Andover AO’s saying (and the Dean’s Journal stating) that extra materials just add more for them to read. I think that the SSAT scores alone are fine, because that’s what they request from middle school applicants. I mean, you don’t want to add more paper to your folder for something like test scores, IMO. :)

Haha, ok, thanks! But if I score better in SAT than SSAT (I know…highly unlikely, but fingers crossed), would it be worth it to send?

Ahh, I’m not too sure. Maybe they’d like to compare you using the “common yardstick” of the SSAT to other applicants your age.

Nova, I don’t think sending your SAT scores will be necessary unless you’re in 11th or 12th grade.

I would say with that percentile its not worth it, its not far out of the norm after all. If you’d had a particularly bad day, it might be worth it to show that that’s not your ordinary level, but I wouldn’t be too worried about it :)

I think if you are applying for 9th or 10th, I’m pretty sure the SAT is not considered an “official” test in terms of application requirements (meaning it is not accepted in lieu of the SSAT/ISEE). If your CTY-qualifier scores are outstanding, I guess it can’t hurt to email them to your AO as soon as they come in. Since my daughter had taken it in 7th grade, we included a mention of her SAT scores (high honors level) where it seemed appropriate in each application (either in parents’ statement or in awards/distinctions).

I bet a significant percentage of the Andover applicant pool has taken the SAT for CTY or TIP, and likely scored high…so unless your scores are stratospheric, it may not be that much of a differentiator.

If the SAT score(s) is/are stratospheric, make sure you do send them in. For example, if DC qualifies for the CTY SET (Study of Exceptional Talent) program, that is in fact really unusual statistically (700 or greater on an SAT score before age 13, and then some more complicated algorithm if the child is older than 13).

The reason that CTY requires 8th graders to take the SAT is because it’s possible to “top out” a test, to the point it doesn’t really tell you much about the abilities of an exceptional child; so having a test that is significantly harder than that a child of a particular age normally takes is needed to really detect them.

I’m not saying they need an “official” score report, just that the information is useful (and doesn’t cause them to have to read much more).

I didn’t send my SAT scores because I figured my score, while high, wasn’t too unusual among applicants to the CHADES schools. I’m kind of rethinking it now, though, because I did score 770 on sections.

Thank you so much guys! Well I guess I’ll just wait for the scores to come in, and if they’re really good I’ll think about sending them.

What’s considered “exceptional” enough of an SAT score (for a 13 year old) for Phillips to feel like it was worth reading?

If you scored 770 on a SAT section at age 12/13 you should be sure to let the schools know. Most Andover/Exeter/Deerfield or similar schools seniors won’t score that well even in 12th.

IIRC, the CTY SET criterion was 700 before age 13, adding 10 points/month for after the 13th birthday.

Letting them know can’t hurt, and won’t burden them as it is not asking them to read much more.
