Hello, I was wondering if I could submit two essays for the Harvard Supplement? One would be a 500 word essay that I used to apply Yale SCEA (I was accepted, so it must have been alright). My common app essay is about my passion for science, while the supplement is about my culture. The other "essay" is just a list of books that I have read over the past year. Will this be overkill? I saw some other people submitting 1000 word essays, so I was thinking that an additional list of books wouldn't hurt. Thanks for your help!

If you feel that a list of books would add to your application, then go ahead and send it as well.

Yeah, I wrote a thousand word essay as well. I would say go for it

Thanks for the advice! After I’ve compiled my list, I’m not sure if it is “impressive” enough. I mean, most of them are required readings for school (The Classics: The Iliad, Great Gatsby, Scarlet Letter, etc.) To me, many students have read these same works and it doesn’t set me apart. The others are a LOT of physics books (like Stephen Hawking’s “The Grand Design”, Elegant Universe, etc. ), the bible, “The God Delusion” by Richard Dawkins, Kerouac, Vonnegut, Bradbury, and some other science books (medicine & neuroscience related). Would you guys think that listing books truly sheds light into what kind of person I am?

Also, what do you think about the idea of listing songs that really impact me? I know UChicago had something along the lines of this. I’m much more of a music nerd than a book one, so I thought this might be better for me. However, I feel that music might be a little less…intellectual? I’m not sure to be honest. I appreciate all the help!

I would not send in a list of songs. The only time I imagine an admissions committee would take the time to play submitted music would be if the applicant created it. Plus, every high schooler and their dog has some favorite tracks that help them get through rough days. Your interest in music wouldn’t set you apart.

I would not send the music/book list. Everyone applying to Harvard could make a list of books they’ve read, or a list of songs they like, but apparently Harvard doesn’t find that information very helpful since they don’t ask for it.

@unicameral2013: A list of books was listed as one of the options for Harvard’s supplement. I understand where you are coming from though.

The song idea is out, but do you still think I shouldn’t send in the book list either?

Oh, my bad! In that case it’s tough, but I would lean towards picking 1 thing to send, either the list or the essay. It’s really up to you though. Maybe add the list to additional info on the commonapp?
