Can I take a language class in my own language?

English is my second language. I am wondering if I can take a language class in my own language. I want to use this to fulfill my COE humanity requirement. Will the instructor kick me out because I already know this language?

You’ll be fine. If you’re really fluent, you might want to go to an intermediate class. However, if you want to be in a beginner course, it’ll still be fine. If you have to, just act newbish lol. I doubt they’ll kick you out regardless unless you can outright speak, read, and write well!

lol, thanks. My class is intermdeiate to advanced, I guess I will be fine then.

They can tell if you’re a good native though - my friend got bumped up to the native class. Couldn’t act noobish enough.

The language departments will want native or heritage speakers to enroll in a suitably advanced course in the language or literature (they usually have placement tests or guidelines on their web sites). Since you came to Berkeley to learn something, you might as well make use of your time here to take courses where you learn something.
