I'm an MCB major, and I have a lot breadths done, so I need to fill up my schedule with something useful.

Since it's full and there's no waitlist, do I just keep checking back to see if there's a space open?

how do u have alot of breadths done as a freshman? (assuming 1st semester…could be wrong). just asking cause i know alot of ppl don’t know that you can’t use AP credits for breadths.

Yes, you can take Bio 1B as a freshman. As far as enrolling goes, yeah, your best bet is to just keep checking.

okay thank you.

Are your breadths transfer credits from Community College? As stated earlier, you can’t AP out of breadth courses.

generally not your first semester. A lot of people (like myself) take/took Bio 1B spring their freshman year.

It is recommended to take Bio1B before Bio1A. Bio 1B is more fact based, do your readings and go to discussions and you should be fine. Bio1A, on the other hand, is well recognized as one of the primary weeder classes for Biology majors, which is not a good thing.

Yeah, they were transferrable college classes. That’s taken care of. So now I just want to see if I can jump to bio 1b in the fall if i get a spot.

you are already trying to take Chem 1A, Math 1A, and Physics 8A this fall. Hold off Biology 1B until spring.

actually, I’m not taking all of that. I’m only signed up for Physics 8A and two breadths. So, bio1b could work?

you should be taking Chem 1A and Math 1A, not Physics 8A and Bio 1B. You need to take Chem on time, otherwise you will be late on Chem 3B/L and Bio 1A/L

I don’t need math 1A for a fact, so we’ll go with that. I need all of the other classes you mentioned though. So, if I delayed chem 1A to spring and did a summer semester, would it be fine?

It would behoove you to not delay Chem 1A. Having to take summer school is expensive and tiring. Chem lab during summer is absolutely no fun as you have two labs most weeks.

I’ll probably be bored during the summer anyways. I mean…what to Berkeley students do over the summer if they don’t do a session? Go home and do whatever in their hometown? I’d rather stay here.

Trust me you rather not. Taking Chem 3AL during summer session is not at all desirable.

Why do you keep asking for schedule advise and the keep ignoring it… Just take Chem 1A in fall like every other fall admit does.

Summer session, especially session C, tires you out. You don’t know Berkeley, you haven’t been here yet. Taking the summer off is important, so you can mentally reboot and relax a bit.

(I was a spring admit who did FPF, so I took Chem 3A/L in Summer 2008, it was not fun)

Eh, tons of people take Chem 3A/3AL over summer - like enough to fill all >500 seats in Pimentel. I did it last summer and actually liked it. Also Pedersen teaches over summer and he is pretty awesome.

Good friend of mine took 3A and 3AL over summer with Pederson too and did just fine.

Actually, I AM at Berkeley right now and am taking classes over the summer. It’s not so bad.

Is chem 3a/al easier over the summer or just the same? Also, are is chem 3a/al two separate classes? Do people take them at the same time? Should it be the only hard class you take at once or can you pair physics 8b with it?

Here’s something to consider: The average for Sp10 on the first midterm was ~80. The average for the first midterm for Su10 was ~115. Either the people are really that much smarter or its that much easier.

I’m taking Chem 3AL right now and it’s fine. I already took Chem 3A in the spring. So they are two separate classes and I would say it is ideal (considering time and money) to take them in the same semester. And for me, it was the only hard class I was taking and that was enough.
