Can I take R1A without meeting the UC entry level writing requirement?

I am not saying that I will not go to take Analytical Writing Placement Examination (AWPE) and get passed. My situation is I am an international student and I am a current freshman applicant to UC. I intend to take UC Berkeley summer session to earn some credits before going to the university as a freshman. Actually, I would like to take some required classes first such as R1A. I do know that a score (maybe 680) on SAT writing will fulfill the entry level writing requirement but mine isn't enough. And both AWPE and corresponding AP are held in May, which is long after my registration on summer session. I get it that students admitted to UC but didn't meet the entry level writing requirement will have to take college writing R1A to satisfy both entry level writing requirement and the R1A.

It's just the timetable not right. I will take AP in May, and of course AWPE. Just it will be after I enroll the summer session class. I guess the results will be out in a few weeks so maybe I can show the instructor the results to prove that I am eligible to the course?

Could you enroll in a college writing R1A as well as a non-college writing R1A and then one eventually complete the version that’s appropriate based on your SAT writing and/or AWPE scores?

Sadly, I believe they block your enrollment anyways for R&C classes you don’t qualify for. I remember I couldn’t enroll in R1B for my 1st phase last semester because they didn’t process my AP scores. If you intend to enroll in R1A over summer, you might be forced into taking College Writing R1A until there is evidence you’ve passed the AWPE. You can also wait until fall and take different courses.

Another option would be enrolling for a summer session that starts after the AWPE or AP scores are processed. I believe AP scores are processed by July if you opt to send it to Berkeley when taking the test. Mine were processed by July 1st. AWPE is even earlier, I believe.

there are other breadth classes you could take as well as early pre-reqs for majors you think you will pursue. Don’t fixate on the R&C alone.

success with scheduling at Cal comes from knowing all the potential classes you will need, then being flexible when registration opens for you (telebears appointment), as some classes will be filled or not given in a semester but others may be open. Two classes you want may be open but have conflicting class times this semester. Nobody takes the classes as they planned them in advance, but pretty easy to get all the classes you need if you are flexible each semester.

You might be planning to satisfy a phys science breadth and R&C, but instead take an internal breadth and a different class toward your major, if that is what works out best.
