I have a half-day for my upcoming senior year. My counselor has already assigned me 2 classes per day: 3 AP class and 1 regular class. I also registered for AP Spanish but AP Spanish is offered on period 3, which is after my half-day therefor I can't take it. So can I take just the exam in May without the class?

I am a native speaker. I can read and write. I'm just not firm on it; I'm just average. And my mom can also help me.

I am also dual enrolled at PGCC (community college) and I took Spanish there. With the books that I got from PGCC, it should help with AP Spanish. I already know what the exam looks like, I probably don't need to study until May arrives.

I really don't need the class. And I never took Spanish in high school, I got placed on AP Spanish because I am fluent and I took a test to get into it.

So can I take just the exam without the class?I heard that it's possible. If yes, then I will talk to my counselor ASAP.

Yes it is possible, though I don’t know enough to say whether it is useful if you already have CC credit. I would still buy a prep book, study, and take a couple of practice tests (I assume in the prep book).

Yes, you can take it without the class (probably common for native or heritage speakers or others who learned languages without high school course work). It may, however, be redundant to your college courses, depending on which level of college course you completed.

Yep, you totally can! I actually took the Music AP exam without taking the course (because our school didn’t offer it) and got a 5.

Why would you bother? You wouldn’t be getting credit for taking an AP class and you will already have CC credit.

@"Erin’s Dad" What do you mean? My school offers AP exams for free. Plus, the AP spanish would place at another level. Come on brush??? Really

S1 had a similar problem. He could only take 1 semester of AP Spanish IV. He got a 5 on the exam and got 19 Spanish credits for his effort. It is worth more than just one CC class at most schools that offer credit.

He is not a native speaker, but languages come easy to him.

@laurenlucelucca Congrats. LOL. Did you do any preparation for it? LOL

What level of college course did you complete?

For example, Berkeley’s Spanish department considers an AP Spanish score of N to be equivalent to completing N-1 semesters of college Spanish courses (so you would start in the Nth semester college Spanish course). Other colleges may have different equivalencies.

@ucbalumnus Yea it depends on the school. Completed the 1 course only

I only took Spanish at PGCC, which is the first low level for Spanish. In general, I don’t know what AP Spanish would equal. I assume probably at least the first two Spanish courses in college.
By the way, my school offers AP Exams for free. So, since you are telling that it’s possible to take the Exam, then I will go head and take advantage of it.

Haha thanks and not really. I studied violin since age 4 so I knew a lot of music theory on the side. I think I brought a book like 2 weeks before but that was it!

My sister took the AP Spanish test without taking the class (nobody signed up), and she did just fine self-studying. You’ll be fine.

@topaz1116 lol. Exactly, not many ppl sign up for it so it’s a waste of time to take the class.

@laurenlucelucca Lol. But Music theory sounds hard. Good luck . And is your name lauren or luce LOL?

@laurenlucelucca good luck with your violin*

@barcakid Thanks! Haha I’m Lauren. I loved staying at the town of Lucca in Italy when I visited. Luce means “light” in Italian… basically Im just in love with Italy haha.

@laurenlucelucca I want to go to Italy to venice but it looks expensive. And luce is similar to saying light “luz” in Spanish. LOL. And I’m German (name) by the way. Like your pic, you look nice. Where you’re from? LOL

It is possible to take AP exams without taking the class, but since its your senior year by the time you take the exam you will already have picked the college you will attend so its not like you can get a 5 and put it on your transcript and if you have CC credit for a spanish class there might not be a need for you to take the exam.
