Can I take two math classes this summer semester?

It will be Pre-Cal and Trigonometry. Is this manageable at all? Or even possible? The courses only last about 6 weeks.

I say this because I want to transfer as soon as possible. If I do this, I can take Calc 1 in the coming fall. I started out at elementary algebra and have gotten all A's since then.

Possible?

I thought Trigonometry was a pre-requisite to Pre-Cal?

I’m not sure, but I am able to register for both classes for this summer semester.

Huh, my college forced me to take Trig before Precal.

Anyway, be prepared to put in some work. I took Trig in a 5 week class a while ago. The material itself isn’t very hard, but the workload is very time-consuming (it was for me at least). It took a lot of grinding through homework (guy gave us LOTS of hw) and a bit of studying for tests to get an A.

I’m in pre-cal right now, and essentially it’s a review of algebra and trigonometry for the first half of the semester. the second half, you learn some new stuff. if you’re good at Math though, precal shouldnt be too hard since most of it is just review.

If I were taking Trig and Pre-Cal I would be prepared to not sleep. It’s not that the material is very hard but the workload is pretty big – especially when it comes to homework.

I feel a bit relieved, then. Since I am motivated to transfer as soon as possible, and have nothing else to do, I will put in the work.

I remember Trigonometry and Pre-Calculus being the same class when I took them. (EDIT: Literally, it was just one class; of course this was back in high school, so it was a full year class, but that’s usually equivalent to one college semester.) There is a lot of overlap, so you may find as far as subject matter that you are doing some of the same things in both classes for the first two weeks. I would recommend speaking to the person teaching that Pre-Calculus class and asking their opinion. If they plan to assume a lot of knowledge of trig in the first two weeks of class, without any in-depth review, you may be setting yourself up for failure.

Bakemaster has a point. We just got to the Trigonometry chapters of our Pre-Cal textbooks and the professor just skipped through most of the steps cos he assumed we already had a good knowledge of Trig. For example, he would just say “Use the inverse sine function to get your answer” without explaining what the inverse sine function was. If I didn’t take Trig I would have been a bit lost and probably would’ve needed to do a bit more self-study.

I agree with the others. It will be a good amount of work but you seem very motivated so I would say go for it. I, too, started out in elementary algebra after returning to school and received all A’s through calc 2. It is definitely doable, just keep working hard!

Also keep in mind, since Trigonometry is non-transferrable, you can take it for a Credit/No Credit basis. Then you can coast with a C and concentrate more on Pre-Cal which will count towards your UC GPA, unlike Trig…why didnt i mention that earlier?

I took Trig for a letter grade since i already had 8 CR/No-CR units, so if you’ve already got a bunch of NCR/CR grades you might want to do the same.

That’s actually an awesome idea, poserbruin. I’ll definitely keep that in mind.

And a big thanks to everybody who posted. I got all the help I needed.

:)
