Can i transfer into Rice if I was already accepted once???

Hi I’m trying to see what my chances of transferring into Rice are. I was admitted last year, and it was my dream school ever since i could remember. I worked incredibly hard in high school to get into the school and it was like a dream come true when i was accepted. But i wasn’t able to go. The school was too expensive, about $45,000, and i instead went to UT austin. Luckily over the summer, a family member who use to be in a very difficult situation, unemployed and with many family issues, was able to get a great job, and said he’d be willing to pay for the difference if i got in. Now i am trying to do my best in school, make the best of my situation, and get into Rice. What are my chances?

What should i do?

I’m doing my best with my given situation, UT was very different from the college experience i had always hoped to get from Rice, but i’m learning a lot and there’s a lot of great people here. I want Rice more than anything though. I love everything about the school, the atmosphere, the close relation students build with one another and professors, the residential college system, the complete feeling of home that you really feel there. The school also has great academic opportunities, Rice provides an incredible education, great research opportunities, and they have the Texas Medical Center right by it, im thinking of doing pre med as well.
I’m doing everything i can to get in. My main concerns are my College EC and my recommendations. Also that i was accepted and didn’t go, but these were for monetary reasons only. How does this affect me? I plan on writing my situation to the admissions faulty. Any thoughts?

I don’t see why they wouldn’t accept you again, especially if you talk about your situation coming out of high school. I know someone who got into Rice, transferred out, then transferred back in, so I don’t think your story would be a problem. I think really highlighting why you still want to go to Rice in your essays can really make a difference.

Do you think so? I’m not sure, the main reason is that i talked with an admissions adviser and looked around, and it says that i will be judged as a transfer student and i will be compared to with all the other transfer students applying, so i’m worried about my resume, Rice is very competitive and they say that i’m being judged equally among other applicants, so does having been accepted before boost any chances? Would i be able to get in with my current application and information?

That’s right, you are in a different pool of applicants now. Having been accepted before is only an indication that you were qualified, nothing else. That is good because applicants without 2 yrs college do need HS transcripts submitted. I don’t think you should take advantage of someone newly employed, who probably has some catching up to do in terms of financial stability and retirement planning. One more year you will be a junior and more engaged with the smaller world of your department. No one can tell you if you will be admitted to Rice except admissions after you submit all materials and compared to that year’s pool.

Well the family member is stable financially, they found a great job, and they are doing very well now, that is the only reason that they are offering me the opportunity, and they know how much Rice means to me, but unless they would be financially stable, i wouldn’t have taken the offer. i also would love to be able to go to Rice next year, I feel it would make me so much happier, and it would be really what I’m looking to find in a college experience and education. This is my dream school. I just hope my resume gives me a good chance of acceptance.

For what it’s worth their transfer statistics aren’t very good. We’re talking under 6% or under which basically makes it like an Ivy. Good luck in either case.

cdan, I’m also a freshman at UT in ECE who is in the same boat as you too. I was accepted into Rice but I regret my decision of turning them down to come to UT because of money lol. But I would say that being accepted before should give you a benefit, if anything at all. You’re in their records as a qualified applicant. The only thing that is really hard to do at this point is doing well in your classes to get a high GPA! good luck
