Can I Transfer Schools Before Enrolling?

Hi All,

I was recently accepted REA to the Notre Dame College of Science class of 2021. I had put Neuroscience as my top major with Business (specifically Finance) second. I was under the impression from what I had read and what the admissions officer had said when she came to my school that we would choose majors after freshman year. I thought the questions were simply asking what we most wanted to study at the moment. Had I known they were placing us immediately into separate colleges, I would have applied to Mendoza and been able to freely transfer to another college if I wanted to switch majors. Now, however, I am in the College of Science and will have to compete against many others applying for an “extremely limited number of spots” (from the acceptance letter) to Mendoza after freshman year. This could affect whether or not I decide to enroll as long as I am accepted to one of my top two other universities. Should I email them soon asking if there is any possibility I can switch before enrolling? Otherwise, I could email after I decide to enroll. Would I have a better chance of being allowed to switch if I ask before RD decisions are released? Thanks for any input.

I would contact admissions now and ask if they can switch you to Mendoza.

@happy1 Thanks for the help. Sadly, I emailed my adrep 11 days ago and haven’t received a response yet. Hopefully she is simply busy.

Admissions officers are swamped right now. Perhaps try calling.

Finally heard back. Unfortunately, I’ll have to apply for one of those limited spots sophomore year if I decide to go there.

From what I have heard, transferring is not as difficult as people thought it would be. Don’t worry - it will all work out! Maybe you will find that you’d rather do science-business major. And remember, there is no major you can’t be successful with! Follow your passions!
