I am currently a freshman at the University of Pittsburgh. I was wondering if I can transfer to UPENN with a 3.0 or a 3.5 GPA. (If my GPA is a 3.0 or a 3.5 GPA by the end of my 2nd semester)

3.0 = NO
3.5 = Still No, but might get lucky.

3.5 = NOsakdjfl;af

you should still apply, you might get lucky.

What about from Emory with a 3.6-3.7 GPA?

Anyone know of anyone who has gotten into Penn with a 3.5, who wasn't a varsity athlete or a sixth generation legacy? (I'm at CU Boulder).

I think that you'd at least have a shot, Jmbarr.

I'm bumping this, because someone out there has to have some advice about/experience with Penn...

a 3.5 would give him a shot... you guys are too critical, a 3.7+ gives you a GOOD chance, however a 3.5 is still definitely within consideration...

ummmm.. no. i doubt a 3.5 from pitt will get you in.
penn is getting harder and harder every year.
i know a lot of transfers at penn, and they all have had gpa's of at least a 3.8 or better, except the one i met from uchicago that had a 3.6. and let's just say pitt is nowhere near as prestigious as chicago.

the average gpa of transfer students to alot of the top 15 schools is like a ~3.7, to think that everyone who is transferring to penn has above a 3.8 just means your friends are in the upper-percentile of the transfer class, it's not a great sample

I have to wonder if it'd be a 3.7 average at Penn...but if it is, and they accept students with 4.0s, then they have to accept students with 3.5s. Which would be excellent.

you have to remember a 3.7 is an

A
A
A
A-
B

in one semester

a transcript that looks like that is really good, college is really hard, people get accepted to more selective schools than penn (such as brown) with Bs on their transcripts

Yeah. My grades were:
A, A-, A-, B, B (17 credit hours, usually students take 12-15)
A, A, B+, B, C+ (19 credit hours - the max limit allowed, the C+ was Physics for majors; I'm an English major)
A, A, A, A, B+ projected for this semester (16 credit hours)

Not good enough. But I'm applying anyway.

anyone know the acceptance rate for different colleges within upenn?

your grades look good, although i don't know WHY you would EVER take a physics major class as an english major.. that just sounds painful.

your courseload helps your GPA look more credible too, don't forget

i don't know anything about the schools within penn except that wharton is obviously much harder than A&S

EDIT: (in admissions, of course :p)

Thanks for all the replies. I might just transfer after my 2nd year so I can build up my reputation with research people. I was hoping to do a good amount of research and also get my name on some publications over the summer to help my app after my second year. Would this help set me apart?

In my opinion, sounds like a good plan, and I think you'd have a shot. I'm applying to be a junior there.

Do whatever you can to make yourself stand out--academically, extracurricularly, etc.

Side ?: Didn't Penn get extremely selective this past year? I remember reading on CC that, like at Brown, the admit rate dropped significantly.

Well, that would blow. God, I was born in exactly the wrong year.

No offense to anyone...but don't you guys think that GPA's might also differ wrt your major or college...I mean its certainly very difficult to maintain a 4.0 in an Engg major than it is in an Humanites/Social Science major...also its difficult to maintain a 4.0 at a Intense Private tech school than it is at a state college....
But if Penn does not take all this into consideration it would be weird...
