Hello everyone. I would like to go to UCSD and study communications, however I have accumulated 9 w’s due to an entire year of struggling with bulimia and depression. I have read on other forums of people explaining to the universities their situation but those discussions are about 5 years old and I’m not sure if they are valid anymore. My current GPA is 3.6 and it is bound to go up within the next 2 semesters and I am also involved in school and the community, but I would still like to know my chances. If anyone has some insight or personal experience, your contribution would be very appreciated. Thank you!
If you explain yourself well in your personal statement and continue to demonstrate an upward academic trajectory, and if you take advantage of the application spaces which give you a chance to explain discrepancies on your record, you should be okay. Your mental illness will not be used against you in the admissions process. Best of luck with your recovery—I can say firsthand that it’s a long road but the destination is worth it.
