can i transfer

i had a 3.3 gpa in high school I work full time and I attended a local community college where my first semester i took 3 courses and received a 3.2 gpa. My second semester my dad was diagnosed with cancer. My parents are both immigrants who do not speak english well. I took over the home and handled everything my father needed medically. By the time this all unfolded it was too late to do withdraw from my classes. My gpa dropped to a 1.9. Do i have a chance of being accepted as a transfer to another school?? Any schools that come to mind in the new england region?

You shouldn’t have a problem transferring to another school. Firstly, you have a track record of good grades (with the exception of the last semester). Secondly, you can easily explain what happened that semester if required to address it.

I’d start by speaking to your community college. They may be able to convert your classes to withdrawals given the circumstances. Many schools have a “compassionate withdrawal” policy that explicitly allows late withdrawal for the care of an immediate family member. So start there first.

If that doesn’t work out, you could also consider just repeating the courses you failed. Typically, CCs will only include the most recent mark for a repeated class in your GPA.

And if that doesn’t work out, then as Mathman84 observed you should not have difficulty transferring anyway as long as you can explain the situation and make the case that you would have continued to be the 3.2 student if not for the family emergency.
