Can I use a Japanese song in my Princeton song prompt?

I am Indian applicant who really likes and relates to a Japanese song called ‘Departure’. However, I am not sure if as an Indian student, applying to an American college, should I use a Japanese song in this prompt? I know college essays should be honest to oneself, however I am wondering if this would be over the top and feel like trying too hard.

No, not trying too hard. If you relate to this song, then by all means use it.

I don’t see any reason why you shouldn’t use it.

I don’t see why not. There is no reason why any one of any nationality can’t relate to a song from another country. There’s no expectation that because you are from India you must only like Indian music. I’m American and I love this classic Japanese language song: Sukiyaki (Ue o Muite Arukou) - Kyu Sakamoto (English Translation and Lyrics) - YouTube

If you’re .worried about trying too hard, ask a teacher or family friend to read the essay. Ask if it sounds like you. If it does, and you’re happy with it, submit.

Thanks so much, also Sukiyaki is so insightful (with a pleasant music)!

You probably know this, but to state the obvious: Princeton does not care one bit what the song is. They care about what you write about the song.
