I absolutely LOVE Georgia Tech. So you can imagine on a prompt like the one below I am struggling to fit everything into the 150 word limit.
“Beyond rankings, location, and athletics, why are you interested in attending Georgia Tech? (max 150 words)”
I was wondering if it would be ok to use abbreviations in this essay such as “GT”, “Tech”, GaTech" in the essay to decrease word count.
@Cubby208 abbreviations should be fine, as long as it’s clear what you’re referring to.
For example, “Georgia Tech” is already a shortened form of “Georgia Institute of Technology.”
I think it’s reasonable. First, follow Mark Twain’s advice and scour your essay for adjectives that aren’t needed. Also take out obvious phrases like “Georgia Tech is a great school” or “I love Georgia Tech”. Finally, look through the school’s website and pamphlets to see if there is a one-word way that they refer to the school and use that if you find it.
“When you catch an adjective, kill it. No, I don’t mean utterly, but kill most of them–then the rest will be valuable. They weaken when they are close together. They give strength when they are far apart.” – Mark Twain
@Otterma I love that tip. Could you give some examples of sentences edited with that tip?
