Can I use FAFSA to help with my school balance?

So I have an outstanding balance for a class I withdrew from at a community college and I can’t register for the next semester until the balance is settled. When I renew my FAFSA can I use the aid I get from my fafsa to help me with the balance??

You can’t use 2019-2020 aid to cover 2018-2019 balances.

Call the school and see if you can set up a repayment plan.

How much do you owe for one community college course? Around here, that would be Under $500 or so. Can you get a part time job and pay this bill?

it it was 2019-2020 for spring

The current school year is 2019-2020. The spring semester hasn’t happened yet.

When did you take the class that you dropped and owe money for. This term? Fall 2019?

If it’s fall now 2019…when did the term start? When did you withdraw from the class?

Oh…and if it’s this current term that you dropped the course…that’s the 2019-2020 FAFSA which should have been submitted long ago. What would you be renewing?

??

I think you mean it was 2018-2019 school year for spring semester.

As I stated earlier, schools cannot use 19-20 funds to cover 18-19 balances. However, if you get a refund and want to use it to pay the prior balance, that is your decision.
The problem is that you won’t get the refund if you can’t register for classes. Some schools will lift the hold for registration if, after the loan is paid to your account, you will receive a refund large enough to cover the prior balance (they usually give a limited time frame in which you have to pay the balance, or they will drop you from classes). You can then use that refund to pay the prior balance. Not all schools will do this, but it is worth asking (assuming that after all semester costs are covered, you would receive a refund large enough to cover the balance).

Again i ask. How much do you owe for one community college course? What is the $$ amount?
