i think my original essay answer the topic question quite well -- will it suffice, or should i use another essay. i'm assuming that the cal alumni and the berkeley admission office are two different things.

my same Q !

Yes, if it fits the prompt fine. The committee evaluating the Alumni scholarships may have your app from admissions (you have to agree to release it when you submit), so they'd see the overlap. As long as it's your own work, it should be fine.

Actually, from the site:

We intentionally made the essay topic very broad. We want you to be creative and convey to us in 500 words how you are a leader, however you choose to. That may mean writing about one single activity or touching on four different activities. It is totally up to you!

Also, please note that those reviewing your application will not have access to your UC application. This means that if you want to use an essay similar to the one you used for your UC application, you are welcome to as long as this is applicable to the topic.

California Alumni Association at UC Berkeley - Student Area

I knew I'd read somewhere that they won't have access to your app, so I don't know why they still ask for your permission to release it.

They ask for your permission to release it?
where?

I also give permission to the UC Berkeley Office of Undergraduate Admissions and its representatives to release any and all information included in my Application for Undergraduate Admission and Scholarships to the California Alumni Association, provided that such information is used for the purpose of evaluating my application for the Alumni Scholarship.
