can i use the same essay twice?

I filled out the commonapp and did a main essay on the topic of my choice, i wrote about why i want to be an engineer. The supplement essay for some of my schools ask the same question that i answered on my commonapp. I already submitted the commonapp so i can't change it. Should i write a new essay on the same topic or just use the same one twice?

do not use the same topic, no matter what. schools don't want to see the same topic on two essays, it shows that you're shallow and have few interests.

the thing is i cant change the topic because the commonapp won't let me submit a new essay after i already submitted it. I'm asking if i should write a new essay on the same topic or use the essay i already did on that topic?

I can't say I'm perfectly sure, but I can't imagine them wanting to read the same essay twice. I'd write a new one, but that sucks!

definitely don't send in a duplicate essay for supplemental and commonapp. The only reason they have the supplemental is that they get to know something about you that is not shown in the Commonapp. It's unfortunate that you wrote about the same topic as the supplemental but I highly advise you just to write another one on a different topic. If I were an adcom and saw a kid with the same commonapp and supplemental I'd be likely to throw the app out the window. If they didn't want to geto to see more of who you are and how you write why else would they have a supplement? Good luck on writing another essay.

The alternative--submittting a second essay on the same prompt--is not appealing either. The essays no doubt will differ, and the AdCom might wonder which essay represents the real you.

My advice is to call the relevant schools and ask someone in the Admissions Office what you should do.

Why don't you focus on why you love math and science, or some other related topic for a second essay?

i cant write on a different topic, the supplement asks why i want to be an engineer, and I wrote the same thing for the commonapp. It was not to smart of me to submit my commonapp before reading the supplement topic, but I cant do anything now. I'm leaning towards writing another essay.
