If you have the time then you probably should. It would give the college a better idea of who you are as a person, and considering that you seem like a hard worker, writing the supplement essay wouldn’t hurt at all. But of course, if the essay really is optional and you have things to do that are of higher priorities, then you don’t work on the essay.

Hahah sorry I just saw the title of this thread and then read your actual question…

it was just an attention-grabber. feel free to chance anyway :)

Well, that’s a nice title, I don’t think anyone can use Yale as a safety :p

I wish i could give you more advice, but i’m clueless myself. Dartmouth and cornell seem reaches, but you’ve very good chances with all the other colleges.

U of Chicago - match
Cornell - match
Dartmouth - reach
Amherst - high match
Wesleyan - low match
Oberlin - match
Bryn Mawr - match
William and Mary - safety
Virginia Tech
Drexel - safety
Hofstra - safety

Thanks for chancing me! but I kind of thought that Dartmouth, Cornell and Chicago were sort of at the same level of difficulty?

chance me back please…http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1438077-chance-bc-nd-uva-umich-bu-wustl-please.html#post15254960

Thank you for chancing me!

I think because you are a URM who did not come from the best of circumstances, admissions officers may may rely more on the qualitative, “soft” aspects of your application such as ECs, School/Community involvement, and (especially this) teacher recommendations and essays. They want to see that you made the best of your situation and have the potential to grow on their campus.

Because you said that you’ll have great recs/essays and also because of your Reading and Writing SAT scores, I’m placing your schools in these categories:

U of Chicago - Low Reach
Cornell - Low Reach
Dartmouth - Low Reach
Amherst - Low Reach
Wesleyan - Strong Match
Oberlin - Safety
Bryn Mawr - Safety
William and Mary - Safety
Virginia Tech - Safety
Drexel - Safety
Hofstra - Safety

You should probably apply to some more schools at the very top! You probably get into at least half the reach schools on there. Why not shoot for Harvard and Yale?

@violinkid
Thanks! I actually thought that I was aiming too high for a lot of these schools… I don’t think that I’m quite Harvard/Yale material though My top choices are Cornell, Amherst, Datmouth, UChi, and Oberlin. Hopefully I’ll get lucky somewhere.
