Is it against the rules for a test taker to bring in a watch? Not like an Apple or Samsung watch, just a regular type of watch that only tells time.
Yes, you can have a watch as long as it’s not a smart watch. It can’t have the ability to retrieve or store data. A plain old watch is a good idea.
Yes- as @Sue22 stated - but not your smart watch…highly recommend you bring a watch because some testing centers do not have a clock on the wall :!!
I actually don’t think you can wear a watch - I went back and checked because I thought I had read something about it. From the website:
Restricted Items
All Electronics
Calculators
Cell Phones (MUST BE OFF)
Fitness Tracker Wristbands
Media Players
All Watches (Clocks will be visible in testing rooms and proctors will provide timing cues)
This is from the SSAT website, prepare, test day, checklist
I am sure the rule is not always enforced. The first time my kid took it all the parents stayed in the building and could actually see the students during the test. Next time, at a different location, parents were not even allowed to wait in the very small lobby that was nowhere near the testing room. We were told that parents are not allowed to be in the same building as the kids during the test.
@dogsmama1997 we believed this also but (unfortunately) ended up at a test center where there was NO clock on the wall and kiddo had no watch. Learned our lesson - as this compromised performance on the Reading section the first time out. Next time we were prepared with a cheap watch (with 2 hands, not digital). Again, there was no clock on the wall of the second school we went to for the test (it was in a new gym and clock not on the wall - not even the electric scoreboard yet). It’s a bit anxiety provoking if you live in an area of the country where you have to travel to an unknown school to take the test. On the safe side, just bring a simple watch :!! …I do know from other folks on CC that our experience was not unique a couple of years ago.
@Golfgr8 and @dogsmama1997 I think it depends on the testing center and how strict the proctors are it seems like at some sites the proctors won’t confiscate a watch but at others they will check for watches. At the location I tested at if you brought even a cheap watch (not digital) they will take it. When I took the ssat the first time I brought a basic watch with me to help with timing issues on the math and reading section. The proctors checked our wrists before we went in to the testing room, and upon seeing that I was wearing a watch they promptly confiscated it. There was no clock in the room, and I was at a school in a different state, and all the anxiety of the situation lead to decreased performance. The next time I took the test I called ahead to the testing center where I would be taking the test and made sure they had a visible clock. Long story short bring a watch but be prepared for the possibility that you might need to remove it before the test.
@dogsmama1997 Thank you, and my testing center is pretty lax when it comes to the rules. Many kids didn’t bring their testing tickets and were still permitted to take the exam. Some didn’t bring pencils as well, but lucky, they provided some pencils for us.
I’m taking my test again tomorrow. Wish me luck! (I’m going to need it :)) )
I agree with everyone - whether it is allowed or not seems to vary.
My child has taken the SSAT once a year for the past 3 years at 3 different sites. The first 2 allowed him to wear an analog watch with no digital features at all. The third did not allow him to bring the watch in the room. They did have a clock in the testing room he could see, so it turned out fine.
Good Luck @YoungThriver you will do great!!
Good luck! Hopefully you get a repeat reading passage like they did in December. We have a friend taking it again as well so fingers crossed all around.
Good luck @cmbyn02 and please let us know about the watches being allowed, or not. Also, if the testing center had a clock on the wall.
@Golfgr8 I was placed at a different testing room than before and there was a clock on the wall like there was the last time. My testing location seems to be very lenient. We were allowed to place restricted items (such as foods, coats, etc.) on the floor next to us. It was a relaxed environment.
Last time I was at an SSAT testing center the kids were allowed to wear simple analog watches & several brought pizzas. Not kidding.
Congrats @YoungThriver and wishing you the very best! :bz
@Golfgr8 Thank you. I think I did as well as I wanted to. Finger crossed! ;))
At our testing site the no watch, no electronics was inforced.
@ReluctantDad there seems to be inconsistencies among testing centers on this …also inconsistencies regarding clocks at testing centers. It is most unfortunate to read about and to have experiences with testing centers with no clock, while confiscating watches. Not fair to students - some can pace themselves and others can’t? We did report this issue when it happened our testing year. Parents should report this to SSAT.
