Can I write about bisexuality?

Is it risky to write about a person being bisexual???

I guess that depends on what you write. “I was just a middle-class what kid who was totally unprepared for the prejudice and vitriol I received when I came out of the closet,” is completely different from, “I’m so open-minded and accepting that I like both boys and girls, and I think everyone else should think this way, too.”

Unless you’re applying to a very conservative religion-affiliated school, it is not inherently likely to get you blackballed. When the admissions officers read your essay, what will they take from it about what kind of person you are and what you would contribute if you joined their community? Will they think you’ve dealt with serious adversity, will they think you’d be a lot of fun to hang out with, will they think other students would be lucky to have someone like you speaking up in classroom discussions, or will they just roll their eyes at your conceit? Will they have read nearly indistinguishable essays from thousands of other applicants?

A good essay can be on pretty much any topic at all. And any topic at all can result in a bad essay, too.

Depending on what you mean by “on the east coast,” you’re fine – which you could have inferred from the answer to your previous question.

I am going to EA Stanford, and as for regular decisions…UC schools and those on the east coast.
Thanks

Unless you happen to have an original take on the subject - highly unlikely, it’s not a good essay topic. As yourself this - would writing about being black or Korean or Romanian be in any way interesting to an admission officer? Basically with any of these topics, you are saying I am nothing more than the package I come in, no matter how you write it. The only possible topic of interest in any of these “labels” is transsexual, and the only person I know that is that chose not to go that way for the reason stated above - it just puts you in a box and says little about you as an individual.

Just remember, everyone on CC thinks they’ve got a great essay, yet admissions staff report that 95% of all essays are bad.
