Can idioms be used in essays?

<p>Can adequate idioms be used in essays? Since I'm not a good writer, I'm willing to know that.</p>

idioms are a part of a language. everyone appreciates a good use of idioms. of course you must know when to use them. you cant make your essay look like a page from Oxford Dictionary of Idioms. same case with proverbs. idioms and proverbs liven up the writing. unless of course some dumb school specifically mentions do NOT use idioms and proverbs in your college apps essay which is as unlikely as people vomiting slugs.</p>

<p>I used contractions in my essays because I speak in contractions and wanted my voice to come out in my writing. Do try to avoid idioms and proverbs. They tend to be too general, and by allowing them to speak for you, your essay might not have much personal voice.</p>
