Can International Student gain California Residency at UC's?

Hey everyone,
I’m currently an International student who is studying in India. I attended a competitive high school in the bay area from the 9th to the 10th, however due to personal issues my family was forced to relocate to India. Now I’m applying back to the UC’s and a couple problems have arisen, some of these being that the fees for the UC’s is significantly high (65k per year).

However, I was told by a friend that if I apply as an International/ Out of state student (I’m an American Citizen) then I might be eligible to pay Instate tuition after attending the UC for 1 year or so. In other words, I can establish California Residency and pay the out of state 65,000 for one to two years, and pay the instate tuition for the rest of the two.

All I wish to know is if this is possible, and if so what is the criteria? My family will move from the India to the California if I go to a UC, so will this help in anyway to establish residency? Thanks!

If you are a US citizen, then you are not an International student/applicant. You would be considered an OOS applicant and would pay OOS fees. If you want establish California residency, you and your parents need to reside in California 366 days prior to attending a California public university and show that CA will be your permanent home.

The link to establish CA residency is posted above ^^^. Coming to California for the purpose of an education will not get you California residency.

UC admission decisions are made in March for the following Fall class so if you wait to see if you are admitted to a UC, you will not be in-state for the required time to establish your residency.

As a US citizen, you are not an international student.

Returning to California for 12th grade (as mentioned in your other thread) is likely to get you residency assuming your parents meet the residency requirement. See link in reply #1.

Graduating from a California high school after three years of attendance (9th, 10th, 12th grades for you) should also make you eligible for AB540 provisions if residency through your parents does not work: http://ab540.com/What_Is_AB540_.html

However, if you do not have residency when you start college, getting it while attending college is unlikely.

In response to your thread title…no.

You won’t get instate rates after attending college at a CA public for a year. And as an OOS student…you won’t receive a nickel need based aid either.

But you are an American citizen…not an international student.

If you want instate rates in CA, your family needs to move more than a year prior to your attending college. So…start packing ?

You need to attend high school for one more year while your family moves to CA and re establishes residency. Only then can you be considered in-state for UCs.
