On campus? I don't know, but F-1 visa allows to have practical training anywhere, so the answer is: "absolutely". Many international students at my college have internships in the area.

Most companies would recruit intl students for their internship programs. Check with your school career service dept. The key to get an internship is to demonstrate good communication and interpersonal skills during interviews.

It's sometime necessary to educate the potential employers that you are legally allowed to work and they don't need any special legal paperwork to have you as an intern.

International students generally have 12 month of optional practical training (OPT) that can be used during or right after the education program. E.g. if I were to do a 3 month summer internship, I would have 9 months left for next internship or full time employment upon graduation. If internship is a required part of a program, the internship does not count toward the 12-month limit.

For those intend to pursue a full time job upon graduation in US, "save" some OPT time so you can begin your job immediately while your employer is processing the worker visa.

In any case, always check with the international student office.
