<p>FIRST OFF, THANKS FOR VIEWING MY POST. NO ONE SEEMS TO WANNA RESPOND. PLEASE DO. THANKS. HERE IT IS:
I'm currently applying EA to the school of gs @ columbia. A couple of days ago I was accepted to Fordham-- the adult/part time program. I am deferring my enrollment @ fordham for september. If I get into the school of gs, then I'll be going there. If I don't get into the school of gs, then I'll go to fordham. Here are my stats:
GPA- a 70 overall average. That is equivalent to a 1.6 OR 1.7. The average H.S. GPA of a School of G.S. student is 2.0.
SAT/ACT- none. I took the fordham adult/part time skills assessment exam. this program at fordham doesn't look at SAT/ACT scores, even if you have taken them. I won't be taking my SAT/ACT, so I'll be taling the school of gs entrance exam. It is said to be an equal alternative to the SAT/ACT, and easier-- just reading and writing.
Rec's-One from a principal at a high school I was in for two years. He happens to be an alumni from the school of gs at columbia. (how far will this go?) In it he'll include a documentry that was filmed by columbia college students. I was who they profiled and focused on.
The other is from a director/founder of a grassroots organization in harlem (columbia is in harlem, is that a plus?) I was a part of for two-- three years. He is a Brown alumni. I was a community organizer there. They are both written very well and eloquently.
Essay-- My essay is very strong. It focuses on my politicization in high school (the same high school where I got my principal rec from) and in the grassroots organization above.
The application asks for an optional additional page "telling us anything else you would like us to know." I'll be sending an essay I submitted for a book that was seeking submissions. It was accepted into the book and is being distributed nation wide. It deals with the different roles assumed by the police in neighborhoods of different socioeconomic standing.
Awards--"Most politically conscious" and the "Hackett medal" (an oratory award for model public speaking. I delivered a speech) from the high school where I got the principal rec from.
"Top tech award for blueprint reading and fabrication" When I finished high school I enrolled in a technical school and took up welding. My grades are top notch. I'll be sending my transcript from this school. 3.6 theory grade. 3.5 shop grade.
I am a 19 year old puerto rican male--yes, the application has a "puerto rican" box. I attended the school of gs information session. A 2 month intership at the same high school where I got the principal rec from. I was a program assistant. My task was to evaluate, critique, and alter a proposed school curriculum. For volunteer work-- the grassroots organization I was a part of.
There is a space asking info about your spouse/ partner/significant other and the college they attend/attended. My girl friend is a columbia college freshman.
Thank you kindly for taking time out to read my post I greatly appreciate it. I'm in dire need of help. Thanks again.</p>
<p>Explain your GPA and you have a chance.</p>
<p>Applying always means a chance, but yours, in my opinion, is dismal without good reasons for your stats.</p>
<p>Did you read all it all?</p>
<p>Yes, but a 1.6 GPA is god awful. You have some other good material that gives you a chance, but nothing is guaranteed. After all, the school's acceptance rate is quite low and this is with amazing applications.</p>
<p>"this is with amazing applications." I have an "amazing application."</p>
<p>Decision: Deferred

<p>[ b]Location/Person:**</p>

<p>[ b]Other Factors:** Won lots of awards, National Merit Semi Finalist
General Comments: Lots of Community Service + extra curriculars
how does this happen?</p>
<p>This person has an application that exceeds yours quantitatively, but your unique traits may help significantly since.</p>
<p>It is part luck with lots of effort.</p>
<p>Are you familiar with the School of General Studies of Columbia University?
What school did "she" apply to?</p>
<p>Sephiroth226, now I understand why you have been the only person to post responses in such a way.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> YOU'RE THE DISGRUNTLED WRITER. IS IT HARD TO FATHOM THAT A PERSON LIKE MYSELF IS A PUBLISHED WRITER. I UNDERSTAND IF IT DOES. AN INFERIORITY COMPLEX IS HARD TO COPE WITH.
PS: ALL RESPONSES TO MY STATS HAVE BEEN OPTIMISTIC. THIS OPTIMISM IS BASED ON REASON. LOVE YA THOUGH.</p>
<p>bump.......</p>
<p>As far as can it happen? Entirely possible. If I was to bet on it, I would consider you very unlikely.</p>
<p>willtopower, you needn't get angry at someone's who's telling you honest chances</p>
<p>it's at 57% for 2005</p>
<p>Chill out. They shouldn't accept you for your immaturity. People are trying to help you.</p>
<p>Question: Is your 1.6 GPA out of 4.0 unweighted?</p>
<p>Yeah, I agree with Badandy: I hope for your sake you didn't let your personality shine through.</p>
<p>if you organize your paragraph a bit im sure ppl are gonna wanna see and respond. honestly, my eyes hurt a bit while reading yours.</p>
<p>at least i've responded. haha.</p>
<p>willtopower17, you're pretty stuck up... and yes your GPA is god awful.</p>
<p>I'm certainly not an expert on the college admissions process, but I am fairly confident in saying this:</p>
<p>Columbia is an extremley hard school to get into. I go to school with a bunch of ocd IB students and many of them will not be accepted into the Ivy league schools that they are applying to. </p>
<p>If you do not have a good reason explaining your very, very low GPA, your chances of admission are pretty slim. In fact, you don't even know if you will have the test scores to somewhat compensate for this low number. </p>
<p>Your awards and e.c.'s aren't very plentiful... a lot of colleges emphasize depth over breadth, but quite frankly, in comparison in many of the students I go to school with, you have neither. </p>
<p>I'm not trying to be rude or mean here, just honest. As long as you submit an application, you'll have a chance so it's worth a shot.</p>
<p>i think he might have a chance...just because he had the courage to show his gpa.</p>
<p>I' m sorry for the nature of my previous posts. They do not reflect my personality. They do however, reflect the stress that I am under.</p>
<p>I do not know if my GPA is weighed or unweighed. The only grades that stand out in my transcripts are three 4.0's during my senior year. One in economics, one in english, and another in global studies. In my essay I do explain and give reason to the disseverance reflected in my grades. I achieved stellar grades at my technical school--3.6 theory average and a 3.5 shop average. The technical school is accredited by the Accrediting Commision of Career schools and Colleges of Technology. I had a New York Times journalist, who profiled me in an article she wrote, look over my essay--she fell in absolute love with it. I also showed it to the former Harvard admissions officer who is assisting me in this process look at it, she felt the same. I test well and will be preparing for their entrance exam by studying the SAT prep book.</p>
<p>Well, once again, I am sorry for any discomfort I may have caused one of you to endure--sincerely.</p>
