Can legacy help me get admitted with low stats at UPenn?

I just applied ED. My parents and brother also went there.

So, here are my stats:
GPA is 3.53, my school doesn’t weigh them.
Old SAT: reading 670, math 690, writing 670
New SAT: reading and writing 680, math 630 (I don’t think they super score between old and new)
AP Calc AB: 5
AP Spanish Language and Culture: 3
I am currently taking AP Studio Art, AP Physics Level C, AP Statistics. I’m also taking an advanced spanish literature class, which is either the same level as AP or harder.
White, female, high income family
I’m submitting a supplemental art portfolio to CAS, and my art teacher is an AP reader for studio art who said my portfolio would probably be a 5 on the AP scale.
I got a letter of commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Program. Not sure if that helps.

I go to one of the best private schools in DC. I’ve played violin since four years old and have played at The White House twice. I started playing guitar when I was 14. I was a program assistant at a computer camp, teaching kids how to code. I have 70 hours of community service, 45 from an animal shelter and 25 from a thrift shop. I also did pre-college at RISD. I did JV cross country freshman and sophomore year. I’m planning on studying Fine Arts at the College of Arts and Sciences and indicated that on the common app.

My essays are also really good, and my letters of recommendation should be too. I’m submitting one from my english teacher, one from a math teacher, and a third optional one from my art teacher. I did a mock interview with my college counselor, who said I was pretty good at it, but I don’t know how important the interview actually is.

Legacy is a small bump. Even with legacy Penn is a high reach for you.

ED and legacy can only help so much. Penn has gotten so competitive that it cant accept all the close to qualified legacies.

Try retaking the SAT. It is not near the threshold for Penn. Get it to a 1450 at least and you’ll be at the bottom 50%

@TomSrOfBoston @Jpgranier oh man, that’s heartbreaking. do you think I at least have a good chance at getting into Boston University, Syracuse, Northeastern, or Wash U in the regular round?

Wash U is a reach, Northeastern a low reach. BU and Syracuse are matches.

Those scores are quite low given your context. Do your parents have a contact in the development office?

@sgopal2 unfortunately no. I know the scores are low and maybe I’m just an anomaly bc my brother had a 1540 on his SAT way back when. He took pretty much the same classes (except art) and had a very similar GPA, though (but he was co-captain of the wrestling team). He graduated high school in '04, so maybe it was also less competitive then. He only applied to Michigan and Penn and got into both :frowning: My sister actually scored even lower than me on her SATs, by like 200 points, she only took pre-calc in high school, and she applied ED too and didn’t get in. I don’t think she did AP Lang either. She ended up going to Pitzer when she graduated in 08 cause they don’t ask for SAT/ACT scores and she did a lot of community service.

I don’t know if this helps either but i got an honorable mention from the Scholastic Art Awards competition and also my college counselor says Penn usually admits about 1/3 of the kids from our school who apply

I don’t think your chances are too high. Given the fact that your sister was rejected with slightly lower scores, I’m afriad you may suffer the same fate.

Why not get a private SAT tutor and try to raise your score?

@sgopal2 my mom mentioned that, and i indicated that i’m taking the SATs again in november (really soon, there’s a class that’s a few hours at a school near me before the test). i just don’t think my score is gonna improve much. the time i took the SAT and got the bigger score (2030) was fall junior year right after taking a long summer course
