Simple question (I hope); I was wondering if midshipmen are aloud to wear contact lenses..I am also wondering if wearage of contacts is aloud during plebe summer. Can someone enlighten me?

Thanks

during academic year-yes, mids are allowed. during plebe summer, nope. plebes wear ridiculously large glasses, called bcg's (birth control goggles).

ok, thanks for the response, now what is keeping a plebe during plebe summer from wearing his/her glasses? Couldn't you just leave them in your room?

lol no. they take them from you on I-day, before you ever get to your room.

oh damnit, now im gonna look like a punk

Comeon... BCGs are HOTT!!!

About as hot as hangnails...

On the WP thread, there was mention of a new style (cooler looking) being issued. Anybody hear about it for Navy?

Excuse me, but I wore my contact lenses all through Plebe Summer, and without any issues from the upperclassmen.

i'm just relating my experience from this year.

All of the mids I've talked to (except for like, one) have told me that you'll get in trouble for wearing contacts during Plebe Summer. They also said that after a while, they were able to wear their civilian glasses without a problem instead of BCGs.

really?

But wouldnt contacts be at risk of being lost during the strenuous activities during plebe summer?

Also, if there is a chance of getting in trouble, i dont really think one would risk it for a pair of contacts . . .

I cannot imagine anyone getting into trouble because of contacts. The only restriction I can think of is having to open your eyes underwater, and I don't remember a single evolution requiring that.

As for other "strenuous activities", give me well-fitted soft contacts over ANY regular glasses ANY day.

I would LOVE to wear contacts over glasses, but everyone currently there tells me that they don't let you. Wheelah, maybe you know: do they take them away on I-Day? Everyone tells me that there's nothing you can do though, you just have to wear the BCGs or regular glasses until the summer is over. I think part of it has to do with infections from getting stuff stuck under the contacts with all the sweating and strenuous activity; it could also be they just want one more reason to embarass you! Haha.

Zaphod, maybe it's just a new rule within the past 10 years or so, but I've heard of some Mids getting in a lot of trouble for breaking that rule (I asked a lot of people during NASS and CVW). But of course, I'm not a current Mid, so maybe someone can confirm all this for me.

All the mids I know had to wear BCG's last summer. No contacts were allowed, at least in my kid's company. Some were permitted to switch to their personal glasses partway through the summer if their BCGs were lost or broken.

Class of 2008 were not allowed to wear contacts either. Risk of infection, falling asleep with contacts in, no time to mess with them, were some of the many reasons cited for the policy. It probably varies by company but my Mid kept his contacts in the backpack with his cell phone and stored in the company area.

Another ridiculous policy.

Nice to know SOME things never change.

correction: my roommates never got their contacts or glasses taken away, but they weren't allowed to wear them. and they DO know if you're supposed to have bcg's, and they will freak out on you if you don't wear them. but bcg's aren't a big deal, so many people are wearing them its just another one of the quirks about plebe summer. plus, they are practically unbreakable, so they can withstand just about any activity.

i think it's ridiculous. I sleep with my contacts in and I usually don't wear them on the weekends, just wear my glasses. They're the soft kind that you're supposed to take out every night, but I don't, oh well. Glasses are really annoying, they fall down and get steamy and the BCGs are really ugly. They should change that... I doubt they will though.

ok--instead of thinking of these BCG's as something that can be used against YOU, use them against THEM. In other words, wear the stupid things, but do your job so well that no one will notice that you are wearing them. Then, imagine everyone's surprise at the end of Plebe Summer when you take them off, wear your contacts or stylish glasses, and they all say, "WHO is this fantastic future Naval Officer??!!"

Focus on the broader picture. And turn a (perceived) "weakness" into a STRENGTH.

Haha way to look at the bright side. Yea, if i don't have any other choice than I'll just have to be the best darn plebe till I get my contacts. What about for NASS though? Do they have any qualms about wearing contacts for that?
