I’m not worried about myself, but I am more worried about how bigoted people in frats may be to a Korean person like me.
I’m no stranger to the south and frat culture- in fact, I love it. My friends like to joke and call me white, and I dress and act like a typcial “frat” guy- its just something I grew up with and has become a part of my identity, since I’ve grown up right in the middle of georgia and attended private school my whole life. I’m just a normal southern kid, love fishing, football (especially the SEC), and I’m down to party while also maintaining good grades. I’m not awkward and have been told by many people that they misjudged me at first because of my Asian descent (funnily enough I think that my wardrobe has a lot to do with people disassociating me from other asians- a lot of cole haan, columbia, southern tide, etc.). Do you think I’ll have a problem getting into top tier houses, say like Lambda or FIJI?
The fraternities don’t sit around and say “no, he’s Asian, he can’t be in our house”. Mostly they think if a guy’s cool and they get along with him they will give him a bid.
But, can you see how you are pre-judging others based on their appearance, just like you are perhaps accusing them of? When you say "top" houses, do you mean you only want to associate with handsome or popular guys or whatever "top tier" insinuates? That you would look no further than facial features to determine a person's (or fraternity's) value?
@Maggpie Really, I just want a good, close brotherhood with people I can grow with. I have seen firsthand your logic and know that value isn’t reflected by popularity or looks, and that the same would go with a frat. Unfortunately, in this day and age shallow people are everywhere, and I guess it’s rubbed off on me.
It is extremely wrong claiming “top fraternities” do not accept racial minorities, northern liberals, people who don’t fish, don’t party (maybe this point is a bit not true) or don’t like football. If that happens, such fraternity will be labeled as a hate group.
Plus if you are really worried about joining fraternities, then don’t. I am sure there are plenty of other places to grow good and long lasting friendship.
