My wife is a brilliant writer and has known our son for his entire life, + nine months actually. We're thinking that it might be a good idea for her to write the optional letter of recommendation. The letter would be humorous and lighthearted and fun to read, and accurate and present a pretty good summary of who our son is and why he would do well at Duke. Of course she is a bit biased, but we figure that's not so bad.

Is this too ridiculous or could the adcoms possibly see us as having good DNA for sense of humor?

So yes, a letter from mom can be submited if the applicant believes that it can significantly contribute to the admissions committee’s understanding of him/herself.

oh, there was another person who posted the exact same passage 1 minute after me. Great minds and all…

But yeah, the usual advice for that type of letter is to have a writer that can shed light on some aspect(s) of the applicant that GC’s, teachers, or the applicant him/herself etc would not normally see or be aware of, thus painting a fuller, more comprehensive picture of the applicant to the admissions committee. If a parent can do that then by al mean, submit a letter.
