I think this shows that you can get into that dream university even if you’re not valedictorian or even top 10. Just work hard and write an essay that shows who you are.
jimmythegent, you probably got a boost because of your URM status.
I doubt that non-URM kids will have much chance with your stats at MIT, Brown and other “dream universities”. We ought to be realistic.
I disagree, even though jimmy’s scores are impressive, He will still stand a good shot in MIT with his ECs(well, though the chance is much smaller)
I think the AA did it for him, quite frankly…but congrats nonetheless!
yes me too, congratulations though

ultimathule, are you recruited as a athlete? because you have strong ECs in basketball so i am just curious
I’m asian. We don’t get recruited.
Just kidding. No, I was not recruited for any schools, I’m not nearly as good at basketball as you have to be in order to get the coaches’ attention.
Plus I applied ED…I don’t think you can do that as a recruit?
Collegebound, he falls right in the 50% margin for accepted students at Brown, in fact he’s above the reported 1390 SAT average in 2005.
So an A/A+ student unweighted with 1400+ SAT, top 5% of class, and some great ECs and you brink all his success on being Mexican?
Read that again…
3.9 UW GPA
1400+ SAT
Top 5% of Class
Excellent ECs
Why do you gloss over all of that?
wow, congrats ultimathule, harvard ooooooyeeeeeeeeee
Not to gang up on anybody, but I know kids with higher stats who got rejected from state honors colleges. I know kids with “perfect” resumes who couldn’t get into the elite college of their choice. I guess there is no telling exactly what any one college is looking for, but you have to know URM status helps. I appreciate when students include this info, as well as athletic info or anything that might have been valuable in gaining admission, because it lets individuals know where they stand.
ultimahtule already stated he wasn’t recruited. It’s quite obvious. (How can you do ED and be rejected through recruitment?)
Certainly, but I think it is helpful to both students and parents to know information in addition to stats in order to better assess their actual “chances”. Thanks to those who post them.
It’s okay ballerina, I don’t take any offense to people thinking I was recruited (well kind of lol)
miracles, tchaikovsky, mitmit, and prowess can you repost your stats again? I’m having trouble finding them, and I’m too lazy to look haha.
lol…

In conclusion, you don’t need an insane grade point average to shoot for your dream schools. Be who you are, and everything will work out in the end. If anyone has questions, feel free to PM me :).
Wow, just wanted to say this thread has been of great help.
Yeah. But the more I read the more I have insane mood swings – between the “Oh my god, I can’t compete against these people”-type feelings and the “Hey, that sounds like me, maybe there’s hope afterall”-type feelings. I’m trying to get myself to read a hopeful one then stopping. So far? Not working.
