I’m the weirdo who visited a lot of colleges and then only applied to three. I just didn’t like the feel of the Ivy Leagues - at all. I fell in love with Furman University, actually, which is where I’ll be attending next fall. (I also applied to Centre College and Samford University as “back-ups” if FU was not forthcoming with scholarships as it costs $48,000/year to go there!).
So, my stats:
Objective:
SAT Reasoning Test:
Math: 790
Critical Reading: 790
Writing: 780
Sat Subject Tests:
Math II: 800
Biology-M: 800
US History: 780
ACT: 35 (36 superscored)
English: 34 (36 highest but on a different test administration)
Math: 36
Reading: 35
Science: 35
GPA: 4.0 UW…who knows as to weighted, since my HS doesn’t weight GPAs. I’ve taken 12 APs and…8 or so “honors” courses so it’d be a good bit above that, I suppose.
AP scores (thus far):
10th Grade:
Chemistry: 5
Calculus BC: 5 (AB subscore: 5)
World History: 5
11th Grade:
Statistics: 5
US History: 5
Biology: 5
English Language: 5
Works out to AP Scholar with Distinction, of course. One more for National.
12th Grade: Physics B, English Lit, Spanish Lang, Music Theory, European History. Expecting 5s on all but Spanish…
Class Rank: 1/~500
Intended Major: Biology (for Pre-Medicine)
National Merit Finalist/Scholar and Presidential Scholar Semi-Finalist
Subjective:
Extracurriculars: Band - Trombone and Euphonium (2x Allstate Band - KY, 4x All District, VP Senior Year, also in Jazz Band), Swim Team, Tennis Team, Academic Team (captain), NHS (VP), Key Club (President), Youth Impact (service club - President), Beta Club, Tri-M Music Honors Society (VP), Freshman Class Treasurer, etc.
Community Service: Service Clubs in HS + Hospital Volunteering + Animal Shelter…nothing groundbreaking
Work Experience: Aid at a local Pediatrician’s office, Swimming Lessons instructor
Essays: I worked my butt off on them. They were lovely.
Recs: I got two teachers who knew me really well and had had me in class for more than one year to write them. I’m sure they were wonderful.
Whew. I was accepted to all 3; I ended up with the Herman W. Lay scholarship at Furman, which is full tuition, room, and board, plus free foreign study. Needless to say I’m pretty excited for my next four years!
I do wonder whether I would have been accepted to Harvard/Yale/Princeton etc. I was just so turned off while on their campuses (and by the fact that they don’t dole out any merit scholarships) that I decided not to even apply.

I will be attending Agnes Scott, which is the best fit for me as far as academics, demographics, special needs services, location, and distance from home go. A certain government program will be helping me bridge the gaps in my financial aid package.
If you’re wondering how on God’s green earth I got into some of these places, know that there were a lot of weird little factors in my favor: I showed a lot of interest in the schools, wrote an excellent essay, and milked the “I OVERCAME AUTISM” thing for all it was worth.
I can give no advice that has not been given before.
Is it important to take SAT Subject Tests?
I am taking/will take 7 AP tests. Are the test viewed by colleges in similar light?
I want to fill this out since CC has helped me out a lot while I was applying to schools and with standardized testing, etc. I applied to seven schools: UVA, Duke (Legacy), Dartmouth, UNC (Legacy), NCSU (Legacy), VT, and Clemson.
