General Comments:
I showed a lot of interest in the schools I applied to. Visited everywhere but Maryland and UCF before applying, went to local information sessions on several. I think that helped. I did apply for merit scholarships at both WashU and Emory. Didn’t get either, unfortunately.
I don’t really know what about me gave me such good luck in applications. I don’t have a lot of leadership experience, nor electives that really relate to my intended major. I just did what I liked doing in high school and it all worked out. (I just wish they weren’t all so expensive!)

First, a message to future applicants: Please, please, please do not get discouraged by the numbers you see on college confidential! Assume that most of the applicants you see on here are at the very top of the applicant pool, because they probably are (and therefore not representative of the average accepted applicant). I promise you, you do not need 2300+ SAT and a list of extracurriculars a mile long to get into college. I was freaking out when I saw the numbers on here last year, and evidently I had no reason to be scared! I was fairly lazy during high school, but i turned out just fine. Don’t be afraid to take that risk!
Love,
Zoidberg93

Hi, I’m 15 years old and am currently a junior. I have a 3.5 gpa and took the ACT for practice/just to see how it’d go with no prep in December and got a 25 (( I am retaking it again and hope to get a 28-30 hopefully! I am Junior Class President, heavily involved in Student Council, Part of NHS-going to be an officer next year, actively involved in Key Club and voleenteer countless hours. I am also an active voleenteer in my church. I was selected for leadership in my schools conference. I have taken challenging classes my whole high school career and took 2 AP Classes this year and am taken 3 next year. I also job shadow my dentist. I want to be a dentist or an oral surgeon and am applying for UIC this June early admission. Do you think I can get in with my current stats? I am praying so because it is the only school that tuition is reasonable and yet offers a strong medical field. I have also been on varsity tennis for 3 years and varsity track for 3 years. I hope to appear well rounded. Thank you for reading this and taking the time to answer, I appreciate it very much as I come from a middle-class family and do not have many options for college due to my low gpa and only a couple schools offer pre-dental in Illinois and their tuition is well out of my range. Thanks once again!*

I hope this helps anybody looking at LACs!!

Essays: My common app essay seemed to be widely enjoyed. I wrote a particularly good essay for USC. I wrote a good essay for Why this school for almost everywhere (Columbia’s could have been better)
Teacher Recommendation: Written by my English teacher and Stats teacher who think I’m amazing.
Counselor Rec: My counselor was new this year; she thought I was pretty amazing and I feel like she added a personal touch, the best she could do.
Additional Rec: Cello teacher sent a pretty good rec, although it could have been more personalized imo. Who am I to complain though?

Reflection
*Strengths: Test scores were good, essays were good.

  • Weaknesses: Rank was weak. More leadership in extracurriculars needed.
  • Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Wasn’t distinguished enough for Columbia and Stanford? Meh, honestly I didn’t apply for the right reasons. I should have researched the Ivy level schools more. And as for Pomona…(sigh) cruel fate, I suppose, and I just didn’t match up. Not enough passion?
  • Where were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:

Accepted: Rice, Tulane (25K), UT Austin (top 8% rule, Plan II), USC (Presidential), Davidson College (Presidential), Duke University, UC Berkeley
Waitlisted: Pomona College (my dream college. I cried like an idiot when I got the letter and felt guilty instantly afterwards that I was so ungrateful. ><)
Rejected: Columbia, Stanford SCEA

Overall reflections: Don’t fall in love with a school until you get in. Don’t convince yourself that the school is a perfect fit for you. Seriously. You do need a bit of the passion in order to write your essays but don’t decide that you want to sit on your mailbox waiting for that acceptance letter. It’s down to USC vs Duke for me. ^^ I’m quite happy actually.

Accepted: Willamette University, Carroll College, Case Western University
Rejected: Reed College
Waitlisted: Connecticut College, University of Washington

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 1960 (680 CR, 610 M, 670 W) Took only once
ACT: 29 Took only once
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.53

Senior Year Course Load: Very Rigorous

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Knowledge Bowl Captain 2 Years, Volunteer Local Political Campaign
Job/Work Experience: Barista
Essays: I know they were pretty good. I write well.
Teacher Recommendation: No idea. Teachers don’t know me very well, though I usually voice my opinion in class and make them laugh.
Counselor Rec: Doesn’t know me at all. Probably sounded very generic. She only knows the kids with strong academics because she likes to kiss their ass.
Additional Rec: Same as other
Interview: None
Other
State (if domestic applicant): WA
School Type: Public

General Comments: Retaking the SAT couldn’t have hurt. Colleges must not care very much about your essay. Upward trends don’t count for anything. My outcome seems very strange and those around me are quite baffled by it all. I am honestly pretty mad because I can’t afford the colleges that actually accepted me. Should have applied to more and/or different ones than I chose. If I could do this all over again I would. Oh well, that’s life.

Is it possible to raise 3.5 gpa in a year to the gpa of a harvard applicant? I’m a sophomore and unfortunately that’s my gpa.

Counselor Rec: Much better than most-- our GC has a much more personal relationship with most of the students simply because there are only ~25 students under each GC
Additional Rec: Had performance supplement + additional rec for Princeton, no other places
Interview: Ironically, for the three interviews I had, I would have ranked them as Yale being the best, followed by Harvard, and Princeton’s being the worst

Summer Activities: foreign exchange to germany, did a summer art residency at the art institute of boston, soccer
Essays: abnormal. i discussed my sympathy for US immigrants (legal or not) and how it was affected by looking like, and thus being treated like, a turk while i lived in Germany. i think it helped me at BU and syracuse, but hurt me a lot at Fordham.
Teacher Recommendation: Only got one, but it was glowing and from my harvard law grad, national teacher of the year, millionaire, ex-lawyer government and geography teacher who i have known for 3 years and who taught my brother before me.

If you don’t get into or don’t get enough money from your top school, it isn’t the end of the world. I really wanted to go to BU, but I certainly have no qualms with accepting a slot at Syracuse since it will actually be cheaper than attending my state school. Also, if you have legitimate reasons which will explain why your grades are low, INCLUDE THAT IN YOUR SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES PART OF YOUR COMMON APP. adcoms really will read that stuff, and they really do take it into consideration. also, if you have a talent, use it to your advantage; i’m sure i would never have gotten into BU without sending a portfolio.

Comments: Pretty low GPA, but I had an upward grade trend going from mostly Bs in freshman/sophomore to all As in junior/senior year. A little nervous applying to W&M and Richmond, because those were probably my reach schools, but okay with the fact that I was rejected and waitlisted.

I have a little regret in that this year I’m taking 4 APs and getting all As, so I’m kind of kicking myself for getting lower grades in freshman/sophomore. I am happy where I am now, because I’m have more academic success and I feel confident I will continue that success in college.

I feel like I should have applied to more colleges (Syracuse comes to mind) but nothing I can do about that now. I’m excited to Gettysburg College. I have to be honest, I haven’t fallen in love with Gettysburg, but I really like it there and I think that’s good that I’m not in love with it yet because I haven’t been there for more than one day at a time.

I feel I will be successful at Gettysburg academically, and I hope to make an impact on the campus as well.

Since we occasionally get lumpy kids in here asking about their chances, I’ll post my stats to show you really can still get into a good college.

2.98 GPA before 7th semester grades, 3.06 GPA after, 34 ACT, very positive grade curve, no APs (none offered), very weak ECs, good essays and recs.

Accepted: U of Miami, OSU, UW-Madison, Grinnell
Waitlisted: Beloit (really shocked me because I thought it was a near safety)
Rejected: Vassar, Hamilton, Middlebury ED

Attending: Grinnell

I applied to Grinnell, Vassar, Hamilton, and Middlebury as reaches, so I was very happy to get into Grinnell, and with very good financial aid to boot.

Another comparison people might want to do is financial aid they received. I personally only received good financial aid from Grinnell and UW-Madison (OSU is instate and would’ve cost me four times as much as UW). U of Miami gave me a decent amount, too, and like I said, OSU was really disappointing.
