I currently am not happy where I live. I don't really like the people, and I'm worried that I'll never get married. Now I face a dilemma. An opportunity has come up for me to attend college out of state with a high price tag OR I can stay in-state, near home, for virtually free.

My first response was to jump at the opportunity to get out of this state. But, I started thinking. It's scary to leave, Its going to cost big bucks, and will it REALLY change anything after all?

And I was thinking, if I'm not happy here. I'm not going to be happy anywhere. Something has to change in me and my mindset.

What do you guys think? Does anyone have any stories about how college life has changed who they were? Anyone went out-of-state to a college where they knew NO ONE and loved it? Any anti-social people who blossomed in a new environment? Any comment about this are accepted with appreciation.

Well it really depends what you mean by “out of state.” Going from NY to Connecticut isn’t really much of a journey, but going from Arkansas to Cali is much different.

It may be instinct. When young birds can fly, they leave their nests and go out into the world so they can spread their genes and whatnot. What’s to say people don’t feel this urge too?

Perhaps going out of state will stimulate you in that sense, now that you’ve been freed from the nest. Consider the financial implications and how much you like the schools in question. Best of luck in your decision.

Living in California, it never really occurred to me to leave the state. I could drive almost a day and still be in the state, lol, so it always amazes me how badly people from other states, mostly the East Coaster’s who live in small states, want to leave. I’m concerned about being 4 hours from home. Guess it just depends on the person and the area you live in.

I know, just based on going to different regions of the state, that you don’t have to go that far to have something different. You could break California off into like, 5 separate states and no one would care because the 5 different parts are so different. It isn’t just NoCal and SoCal.

truthfully in my state of situation i want to get out of my state…there are very prestigious universities in my state which is tennessee like vanderbilt but i want to explore the world by myself. my mom doesn’t want me to go far but its a decision im deciding on myself. i live in tennessee and going to florida for college hopefully. it will be a scary experience for me but you got to learn by yourself. you can’t always expect your parents to always be there for you although they are, but going to college is a different experience and for you to begin a journey in life. thats why i chose florida because i love florida and its a great place to live at. and UCF is a great school. i have felt a little uneasy about it but i have a couple months to ponder about it. trust me i had a whole week of freaking out how i am going to adjust to life in florida.

Yes, Stevped! Like you, I’m very unhappy in my location. It’s something about this place, it’s not only depressing, but it’s making me be someone that I don’t want to be. Don’t be afraid to change your surroundings to give a chance for your happiness.

Especially since, as you said, you’ll have the opportunity to return if things aren’t working out. There is no pricetag for that.

I don’t think people realize the importance of location and how much it affects how we act, how we feel, etc. about our life.

I wish you the best of luck and I hope you are happy wherever you go.
