I'm not going to make excuses, but I messed up in an AP Art History class for my first semester and ended up with a D+. The rest of my grades were decent, As and Bs, and in a pretty tough senior year schedule: 3 APs, one of the editors for yearbook, captain of the soccer team, volunteer work and a job, all of which I listed on my application.

I applied to Cal Poly and UCSB with a 3.7 GPA and a 2100 SAT. What are the chances of any admission being withdrawn because of that D+? The class wasn't required as it fulfills a fine arts requirement and I'd already taken two of those, so it wasn't as if I got a D in English...

The UCs say that you can be rescinded for a grade less than a C. UCSB says this at <a href=“UC Santa Barbara Admissions Portal - UC Santa Barbara Applicant Portal Login”>UC Santa Barbara Admissions Portal - UC Santa Barbara Applicant Portal Login;

They also require you to notify them if you get a grade below a C in the a-g coursework or change your senior year schedule. See [I received a D or F. What should I do](http://www.admissions.ucsb.edu/faq.asp?subsection=23)

My guess is that it won’t affect you, but then again I have nothing at all to do with UCSB admissions. You should contact UCSB admissions as per the link above to tell them about the grade and see if this will jeopardize your chances. You can also ask if there is anything you need to do in order to offset this.

And while it is a bit premature to go down this road, I have a post in the UCSB forum on the hidden way to get into UCSB. So you should know that even if you get bad news from admissions it isn’t the end of your hopes for UCSB. See http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-santa-barbara/468098-backdoor-way-get-into-ucsb.html

Best of luck to you!

Thanks!
Anyone else have advice? What about Cal Poly? That’s my first choice, and I’m applying under the liberal arts college.
