Can my friend get into Havard or Columbia law school?

My friend stats:

UCLA-3.5
LSAT-175

Catholic school Math teacher (1 year after graduation)
-catholic school teachers have bachelors degree

SAT prep tutor for inner city children
Red Cross volunteer
A lot of community services at Uganda

Language- Swahili and English

Major- Math

She is from Uganda but lived in Sudan for a while until she was 10 then she came to America with her family

This is all I know I about her, sorry :( I hope this is enough

Her LSAT is very strong, but the GPA is low for both schools. However, her URM status should help a bit. I would be surprised if she didn’t get into Columbia. Her chances at Harvard would probably be a bit more of a stretch, but not outside the realm of possibility.

if she doesn’t declare herself as URM on app:

In at Columbia, Out at H

If she does:

In at Columbia ($$$), In at H

I suggested go to berkeley, she had perfect grades. Would she be better off there?

columbia- yes.
Harvard- maybe not.

It’s incredible how different this part of the forum than the others.. here with GPA and LSAT you guys can confidently predict one’s chances.

Your friend would actually probably not get into Berkeley. While C and H are better schools, Berkeley has a higher emphasis on GPA. 3.5 probably wouldn’t cut it.

YOU,
that’s because law school admissions is really a lot about numbers.
If in doubt, read the 6 page interview of the Dean of Cornell Law School from the book, “Law School Confidential.”

girl_ski,
I think your friend’s application will be a no from H, a 50/50 from C.

Berkeley- most likely rejected due to low GPA.
Columbia - 50/50 - in with a really good essay.
Havard - reject - GPA is way too low.

I’d be stunned if she didn’t get into Columbia, and a little surprised if she didn’t get into Harvard with her background.

I think a lot of you are neglecting her URM status. She’s a lock at Columbia.

is Columbia really that gracious to URMs?

Are they really that gracious to Africans (considering they are especially overrepresented when compared to “other” URMs-blacks, in particular)?

Columbia rejects virtually no one with a 175 or higher, URM or not.

I think she has a decent chance at Harvard…

Even without the URM, I would say she’s in at Columbia. The 175 is over their 75th percentile. Harvard is a stretch with the GPA, but with URM status it’s definitely possible and worth the shot.
