I was accepted into UCLA this year as a transfer Philosophy student and am supposed to start this upcoming Fall. However, I received a D in my College Algebra class. I have not satisfied my math requirements in terms of the 60 credits to transfer since I failed this math class. I am a Philosophy major, so I'm hoping they won't look at it that hard or hold it against me and it isn't an impacted major. Without this math class I have 56 credits.

I have to report this to UCLA, does anyone know what is likely to happen in terms of my admission?

I also enrolled into Statistics (3 credits) and Major World Religions (3 credits) for summer just in case I didn't pass the math class.

I don't know if this helps, but I have taken 3 Philosophy courses - Logic (A), Critcal Thinking and Logical Writing (A), and Intro to Philosophy (A or B, still waiting on the results)

I really don't want to stay in community college another year just to makeup one class. Please if anyone has any suggestions/comments I would truly appreciate them.

Hmm, there’s a good chance that you’ll have your admission rescinded. There’s really no sugarcoating that.

But there’s also a chance that they’ll be lenient and allow you to complete your math requirement with a C in the summer. They sometimes do that. Good luck, man.

@Cayton Have you heard of that happening before, I never have. It seems that cases like these almost always result in an admission being rescinded.

On this forum, I’ve seen people in years past who were lucky enough to be offered the opportunity to retain their admission by retaking the class they didn’t do well in, but those cases really were few and far in between, so I doubt that UCLA does that very often and the OP shouldn’t really count on it. I hope he/she does get lucky enough to avoid rescission of their admission, though.

From my experience, they tended to offer that option a lot to those who were TAP certified. An unofficial benefit of being in a UCLA TAP program, possibly.

I THINK you still get your units if you get a D. HOWEVER, if you don’t get at least a C in your only transferable math class, I believe that could be grounds for your admission being revoked. Don’t count on them not to check or look to hard, because they will.

If you told them you would be IGETC certified, then you could have problems with that as well. All IGETC courses must be passes with a C.

@CollegeDropout1 I’ still deciding. I’m gonna take summer school at my CSU, then after my UCLA orientation, once they tell me what exactly transfers or not, then I’ll make a final decision.

There is a very good chance your admission will be rescinded. Getting a D period is not a good sign at all, getting a D in a absolute major pre-req is even worse.

Transfer and Freshman admissions are completely different. In the OP’s situation, it’s not just that they received a D, they didn’t pass a basic course requirement. If the OP received a D in a Nutrition class, then it would probably be less of a problem. Not meeting the math requirement in pretty severe. Getting at least a C in the only transferable math course is a must.

Yeah the big problem is it is the required math course. You better prepare yourself for it not going well. Please let us know how it goes. Good luck.

Was this algebra class remedial or transferable? Either way, not having a transferable math course completed (with a C or higher) and < 60 units is a big deal. Maybe they’ll let you take stats in the summer. The only thing you can do now is update your grades, explain your situation, and let them know you’re willing to take stats and another course in the summer.
