your residency for tuition purpose depends on where our parents live. If they moge to a state before September you’ll be eligible for in-state tuition and any existing state aid.
scholarships primarily come from the Colleges themselves and mostly depend on test scores. So, prep and retake the sat/act.
transfers get lousy aid. There are no full tuition scholarships for transfers. Taking even one community college class after graduation can disqualify you from all the scholarships meant for freshmen.
the way many students save money through CC’s is by commuting from home and paying minimal in-state fees for this first couple years. However it typically means being full pay for the last two years. In your case, it may mean forfeiting 4-year scholarships while not having access to instate tuition! It wouldn’t make sense.
@AlmostThere2018 i just had a look and Virginia Tech has a good transfer plan after completing an associates degree which doesn’t really help my case of trying to convince my parents to take a gap year. @happymomof1 at this point all I need to do is speak to them and convince them it is better for all of us if i take a gap year, i think they have the notion theta it is a waste of time and id be better off at CC
Yes but starting at a CC means no scholarship at VTech therefore 2 years as full pay, OOS tuition at the CC + 2 years as full pay, OOS tuition at VTech.*
WAY more expensive than taking a gap year while your parents establish residency in VA so that you can get instate tuition and you raise your test scores to get a 4-year merit scholarship.
We’re talking tens of thousands of dollars in difference.
I just checked the tuition both at instate and OOS rates:
At NOVA CC, you would pay a $6,000 surchage per year for being OOS + $40,000/year at VTech for OOS v. $22,000 instate = ($12,000) + (36,000) =$48,000 more than if you just wait and take a gap year.
The $22,000 instate costs at VTech could be further discounted if you have good ACT or SAT scores.
Your parents probably are encouraging the CC route now because they don’t want you to feel like you are losing any time, and they feel rotten about Temple being taken out of the picture. In addition to the college application advantages of a gap year, if you take a gap year you have a lot more flexibility in when you move to the US. You could come tomorrow, you could come whenever it is that your parents come, or you could come at any time in between. You also have much more flexibility in where you live once you get here - some place you choose now, some place you and your parents choose later. It really is a win-win all around.
Please remember that you and your parents will go through a lot of readjustments moving back to the US. Cultural re-entry shock is a real thing. It might be nice to be able to get that over before you hit the college classroom.
It looks like a very competitive process for internal candidates and “The Undergraduate Admissions Office no longer accepts applications for external transfer into the majors of Architecture and Industrial Design.”
