Can non-work study students work at work-study jobs?

Hey all, I ultimately wasn't offered work study and was wondering if I could still apply for work study jobs? I'm looking at the work study jobs on URSA and they look very appealing. Clerk jobs etc for over minimum wage. Is there some way to get employed without having work study by any chance?

Thanks a lot.

I don’t think you understand what the real definition of “work-study jobs” are. There is no specific group of jobs that are solely reserved for students who have work-study.

Work study merely refers to the fact that the government subsidizes and reimburses your employer some portion of your wage, thus making your effective wage to your employer (and why many employers like work study eligible students because they cost less).

But yes, you can apply.

I see thank you. Under job type it says work study. So I probably wouldn’t qualify since I’m not eligible for work study? Or can I just apply anyways?

Once again you are missing the point. You can apply, however, you aren’t as strong a candidate because you cost the employer more.

Basically they won’t hire you for a work study position. But there are plenty of non-work study positions available on campus.

@biks09 oh alright thanks. So if a work study student is given a 2000 dollars worth of work study per yr, does that mean after the person earns 2000, he needs to quit the job?

@dinoian where do I check for non-work study positions? is it somewhere on ursa?

When you get here in the fall, there will be a huge employment fair during week 0. Or if there are specific jobs you want, you can e-mail or talk with the administrators of those jobs.

If you don’t have work-study but acquired a job on-campus, does that cuts into your financial aids?

Nope, completely independent of your fin. aid.

Keep in mind that your income may be taken into consideration when you file for taxes, or when you file the FAFSA. In that case, it may affect your financial aid.

So for job hunting, can non-work study students navigate through the work study job list to hunt for jobs? Or is it strictly for work study students? There’s a link called “Bruin View” on URSA, is that for on campus jobs but for everyone?
