Can one quiz grade ruin an entire class rank status?

So the other day, my AP World History teacher decides to give us a pop quiz about a chapter we've spend like 1 day on. Not only were a lot of the questions misleading, we hadn't even covered about half of what was on it. I ended up missing 3 "date of certain event" questions and also 2 other ones because I just flat out didn't remember learning anything about it. I ended up getting a 75, even though I usually get high A's on quizzes, and my average dropped 7 points from a 98 to a 91!! There are only 3 more days before grades close in so it's impossible for me to get it up any higher than like a 93.

Now most of you are probably gonna scoff at this, but the class rank competition is pretty cutthroat at my school with a 0.01 G.P.A. difference being the difference between being ranked #1 and ranked #2. I am currently ranked #3 but that is probably gonna change soon :(.

The G.P.A. scale at my school works like this (AP Classes get a 3 point boost, so a 100 in a regulars class would be 12).
97-100: 15
93-96: 14
90-92: 13
etc.

This really ****es me off since I've been working so hard and staying up so late for that class! I really want to go to a good school, not just settle for my state college, but if one lousy grade can damage my ranking, what's the point?

I guess I mainly posted this to vent... my friends got tired of hearing me complain about it and I'm trying to let it go...

So have any of you guys encountered this problem? Sorry to sound like a whiny brat but this actually matters to me...

Since so many students don’t send precise ranks to schools, it is unlikely colleges will care if you are in the top 1-2% as opposed to rank 1.

What grade are you in…?
Just don’t screw up the rest of high school; as long as you’re in the top 5-10% (which also depends on your school) you’ll be fine, I promise.

A few spots in your rank isn’t going to catapult you from top colleges/universities to your local state school.

Haha, what you guys said is probably true, but my mind just has to irrationally magnify the severity of this situation (sorry but I’ve been reading a lot of psychology books lately ;)).

I’m in 10th grade right now so the seriousness of grades still hasn’t kicked in for most people, although it has for me… anyways thanks for your input!

Just frame the other top fivers for cheating. They’ll get zeros and you’ll get a nice little bumper.
