As the title states, I am wondering how having 2 C’s on my transcript will affect my chances of getting in Haas. My overall GPA is around a 3.8, but I received a C in Microecon. The other C was in a random class for my AA. I have some very powerful extracurriculars (started my own online business), but my prereq GPA isn’t that great.
Hard to say. Avg transfer GPA is, what, 3.84? Plus, micro is a pre-req. They really look for high GPA in major pre-reqs. Are you taking other major pre-reqs currently (Calc, for instance)? If so, that may be a strike against you because of the C in Econ, as they can’t determine the grades. Depends also on the quality of essays and ECs.
Biggest hurdle is if you are still taking pre-reqs. If so, that along with the C may make it problematic.
I see what you’re saying right now… I finished all my prerequisites. I got all A’s except 1 C and 1 B…
I am really just hoping that me having started my own online business and having some other very good extracurriculars will make up for my poor GPA
Well, that’s good that the pre-reqs are completed. No one can really say. The average GPA means some are selected who are below that figure. I wouldn’t say your GPA is poor, just in the middle. If you have strong ECs that can overcome a lot. Good luck!
I would agree with lindy in the sense that it really isnt that bad or that big a deal in the grand scheme of things.
But when I think of the dozens and dozens and dozens of people who are on this site hoping for a chance at haas and have A’s in everything then your chances look pretty slim. I imagine youre applying this year so i would look around this site at the haas threads to see what I mean and also to see how you stack up.
It’s not so much that you got a C, but with it in a major pre-req makes it tough.
Then again, this is coming from someone that has 3 C-'s on their transcript and is hoping to get into Haas as well … but none were on major pre-reqs.
hmmm… I see…
yeah I don’t want to get my hopes too high up…
How important is GPA relative to other things for Haas?
So for example, if one person had a 4.0 and barely any extracurriculars vs. someone like me per say, who has a lot of extracurriculars but a not-so-great GPA, who would have the upper edge?
I would say you do. One of my favorite metaphors that ive been told is that business schools are like a dodgeball team. They want the cool kids on their team so they are going to factor in everything when determining if someone is “cool”, having a 4.0 and no extra curiccs is like being a book worm and definitely not “cool”.
Haas says they don’t want just 4.0s. They really do look at the whole enchilada. A 4.0 with no ECs, to them, is cookie-cutter. Having said that, they do expect a certain GPA, especially in the major requirements. But it is a very holistic analysis.
10% of transfer students are admitted with a GPA lower than 3.55. However, from the middle 80% range being from 3.55-4.0 and the average being 3.84, it is pretty safe to assume that far more than 50% of admitted students have a GPA higher than 3.84. A median GPA would be a better indicator, but it is likely around the 3.9 GPA range if we want to guess.
So obviously you still have a chance. GPA and course load is still only 50% of the application. Essays and ECs and the resume make up the other 50%.
