Can requesting a teacher on app. Mess you up?

<p>If you're interested in working with at least one teacher on a faculty, and the app. asks which, and you specify - does that mean you won't get a hearing from other faculty members, and may derail your application if that teacher doesn't want/need you in his studio? Son now schvitzing over this. Among other things.</p>

<p>It doesn’t derail the application. We actually called to find out if the teachers themselves knew whether they were requested or not on the application.</p>

<p>Some schools ask for your top 3 choices, in order of preference. If an application asks for one preference, perhaps there is a good chance of getting that teacher.</p>

<p>I would call admissions and talk with them about this.</p>

<p>It really depends on the school and instrument. For voice, DD specified and got her top one. But there were others who did not get placed in their top and were offered another. I believe in her school’s case, since all listen to everyone, they select the best candidates for the school and then try to match the studio placements and requests until the studios are full. </p>

<p>Other instruments are different. I know that at Rice in violin you select a studio and audition for only that studio. Accepted in studio, then also in the school. Not accepted in studio, not accepted at the school. But they are very up front about it. I would ask the admission folks.</p>

<p>It really is school specific, and ranges from it doesn’t mean a hill of beans to being instrument/studio specific even within the same institution as Singersmom07 indicates.</p>

<p>Most institutions will give you general detail about how teachers are assigned. </p>
