I recently started my second year at a California cc. I am a (somewhat tentative) business major with a current 4.0 GPA. I initially aspired to go to Haas but I will need to spend a third year at my cc to meet all of the pre-reqs. That, coupled with Haas's competitiveness has made me second guess my initial goal. I am contemplating whether I should instead look to transfer to Cal Poly SLO next fall. SLO has a good business program (though not nearly as good as Haas) and I should be able to finish all requirements this year.

As of now I have only completed 27 units with 14 in progress this semester. In order to fulfill Igetc I would need to take 19 credits in the spring, including 3 cal poly business pre-reqs. I am worried that deferring so many units, including the 3 important pre-reqs, might hurt my chances of being admitted. Although my GPA is a 4.0, my ec's are weak. I have a year and a half of part time work and am a PTK member. Do I stand a good chance of being admitted to Cal Poly for next fall?

If so, should I transfer next year or should I spend an extra year (in which I would improve my ec's) to stay on the track to UC's?

Sorry for the long post, thanks in advance for any help.

If you want to go to HAAS, why not apply this year and if you don’t get in, spend another year finishing up prereqs and then apply to both HAAS, SLO, and some other schools?

It depends how you value your time and if money is a big factor. Personally if I were in your shoes, I would stay an extra year and apply for Haas. If you work on your EC’s in that year and maintain a 4.0, you have a very good shot. Yes 4.0’s get rejected but usually because they are missing pre-reqs or might have had a bad essay. It’s not uncommon for someone to stay 3 years at a cc instead of 2, especially for a tougher/more competitive major.

Thanks for the advice. I’ll probably stay at my cc for another year. If I don’t get into Haas I could always tag into another uc (although from what I understand most uc’s wouldn’t guarantee me admittance to their Business/econ majors, only to the school).

Just out of curiosity, would I have a good chance of being admitted to Cal Poly for Fall 2013? I’ve read multiple accounts of well qualified students being turned down for “missing” pre-reqs. I will not have all of their pre-reqs done by the time of application (this fall semester) but I will have completed them by the end of spring 2013. Would Cal Poly consider the classes that I put off until Spring as “missing?”

I’m not too familiar with CSU tranfers but I think they would be okay with it if you finish it in Spring. UC’s allow transfers to finish pre-reqs in Spring and some even into the Summer so my guess is CSU’s do too. I would ask your counselor to be sure.
