Can someone chance me?

I'm a junior in high school, and my final gpa will probably be around a 3.3. I want to major in music business and I'm primarily looking at eastcoast/metropolitan schools. My first choice would be NYU's (Tisch) Clive Davis Recorded Music Department, with Berklee and Baruch as close second choices. Although my grades are mediocre, my portfolio is quite hefty.

-My Ex Life (2006 TV Movie) - Buster
-Just Like the Son (Tribeca Film Festival 2006) - Chris
-Deck the Halls (Feature Film 2006) - Carter Finch

-Big Lake (Comedy Central Series 2010)10 episodes - Jeremy Franklin
-Law & Order SVU (2011) - Dwayne
-Classless (TV Pilot 2012) - Ross Cohen

Most recently, I was in a national commercial for Pillsbury.

Music Business Experience:
-Internship with the Bowery presents(concert promotion in NYC)
-assistant at local radio stations of Long Island for 3 years.
-Internship at MTK Festival in East Hampton.
-Participated in Program to meet with music moguls such as the Chief Editor of Billboard Magazine, CEO of Glazznote Records(mumford & sons/phoenix) and CLIVE DAVIS himself in his office.
-Actively in extracurricular choir ensembles.
-Released a mixtape that I co-produced and completely vocalized/wrote lyrics by myself

-Gay/Straight Alliance Club
-Member of Peer Assisted Leadership(funded by NY State Department of Substance Abuse Services)
-Outing Club Member
-Chess Club

I understand grades are important, so I am still worried about my chances. I'm weakest in math/science but test well in english/history. With around a 1850 SAT score, what do you think of my chances?

In light of your impressive portfolio, I’m not sure if your low GPA will be a decider in this. An SAT score of 1850 is also a little on the low side for NYU, but not terribly low.

Considering your ECs and acting/business/music experience, I would think you have a pretty good chance. Although, to be honest, I’m not sure how heavily the NYU admissions office takes such things into consideration. Regardless, I see reason for you to be optimistic. Just try to get that GPA up while you still can and then hope for the best. Good luck!

Tisch is known to overlook GPA and SAT scores if the applicant’s portfolio is strong enough. I would try to push your SAT scores higher (remember, they superscore!) and show an upward trend in your grades. Both of these, in addition to your already strong ECs and music experience should give you a great chance at being in Tisch.
