The author's statement that the valley man might not perceive the pain underlying the laughter of the Bottom's residents (lines 38-45) emphasize that the Bottom's residents

It is not (D) because there is NO support in the passage that the residents are trying to conceal anything whatsoever.

(E) is also not the answer because the passage flashes back to when the town used to exist and does not hint that the residents even new.

(C) "were not the care free people they might appear to be" is supported by lines 38-45 in which the man who has bussiness up in the hills views the Bottom's residents and can only perceive the "laughter" and does not notice the "adult pain" therefore miscontruing them as "carefree".
