I've heard of some people double majoring at Mcgill but I'm confused about how exactly it works with all the credits and such. I've been looking around the website and Minerva but I think I've only managed to make myself more confused. Could someone explain it to me or give me an example?

sure.

in the faculty of arts, each major is 36 credits. if you will be U1 in your first year at mcgill (i.e. you will graduate in 3 years), then you need 90 credits to graduate. to fulfill those credits you can either double major and take electives, major minor and take electives, or major and two minors and take electives.

if you double major, then you would take 72 credits which leaves 18 credits for electives.
if you major and minor, then you would take 36 + 18 = 54 credits, which leaves 36 credits for electives.
if you major and double minor, then you would take 36 + 18 + 18 = 72 credits which leaves 18 credits for electives.

if you will be U0 in your first year at mcgill, then you need 120 credits to graduate. most of your first year classes will not count towards your eventual major, so the extra 30 credits are just electives.

hope that cleared up some doubts.

EDIT: I know their site can be a bit confusing at first, but i really recommend that you look through it again. it has a lot of info and goes into much more detail.

Ah thank you so much! That clears up quite a lot.

My daughter is admitted to the Computer Science program in the Faculty of Science. She may very well qualify for a full 30 credits out of the gate due to AP exams taken. We were on campus today…spoke with an advisor in the Faculty of Science…looks like she can finish her Bachelor’s in 3 years. She wants to attend a full four years so we were trying to inquire about a double major or 5 year master’s. The Faculty of Science advisor made it seem like a double major wasn’t possible. We visited the undergrad Computer Science coordinator and she made it seem like double majors with CS plus math or science were possible (possibly extending my daughter’s McGill experience another 1/2 year. Does anyone know what is feasible and how hard it is to arrange a double major or accelerate master’s?

Joint majors (or honours) are quite possible but designed to be done in the same time as regular (single) majors/honours, though depending on the combination, they might be difficult to schedule in 3 years. For accelerated Master’s, I don’t know, but accelerated or not, it’s somewhat early to consider prior to starting the bachelor’s.
