Can SOMEONE explain Point of UW/W GPA TO ME PLZ?

okay. i know the more rigorous courses are weighted. in my school. we only have IB no AP. it's out of a 4.8. So is the GPA W out of 4.8 Averaged with your freshman/soph out of 4.3 to get you you're accumulative?? someone care to explain please?? =/

the reason why there are weighted gpas is for determining class rank/valedvictorian.

Lets say Student A has a 3.9 GPA and has only take honors and AP classes his entire time at high school. Now Student B has a 4.0 but has only taken regular classes, and has opted into all easy electives. If you didn't weight Student B would be ranked higher than Student A.

A basic ranking is that an honors/ap course will give you +1 on a GPA. So if I'm taking AP calculus and I get an A, I get a 5.0 added into my GPA where as someone taking regular precalculus senior year only would get 4.0 added into their GPA. This way it ensures that students earning the same grades in honors classes will always be ranked higher than students in regular classes.
