Can Someone Explain This To Me? What A Messed Up World!

[rant]

I’m *in *ed. OMG. Okay, my friend who only really applied to UC’s, these are his stats
3.9 UC GPA / 1390 SAT I / 800 bio / 700 writing / 700 IC
full IB diploma, lots of AP’s, varsity tennis, everything in place, good essays, applied everywhere undeclared

You would think he would have a chance at the top UC’s right.

but geezus he told me he wanted to go to UC Irvine, I told him pfsshh that’s an uber safety for you. but look at this, look at this!
He got REJECTED from UC IRVINE and UC SANTA BARBARA!

Somebody please explain to me why he got rejected? Because I really don’t get it.

(Not to mention, he also got rejected from UC Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD).

And he said most of his friends which are pretty much his equals got into UCLA and Berkeley.

He told me he’s like effin depressed, he got rejected from like everywhere, he doesn’t know what he did wrong. I feel so bad for him, and I’m really ****ed why this happened. I don’t know what to say to him (I have lower stats and I got into Irvine and UCSB…)

this is really a messed up world. usually I can kinda tell why someone wouldn’t be accepted, especially for like UCLA or something, but geezus this is UC IRVINE! i know people with MUCH LOWER stats than my friend who got accepted into UC Irvine.

I told him to appeal but he doesn’t know what to say…

[/rant]

What was his major? And my guess is that it was his essays...something had to be really wrong with them...

he applied everywhere undeclared

his essays were stellar

appeal. This admission process is getting ridiculous. I bet now they are using race without the public knowing. Those stats could get you into probably all UC's conisdering his tough schedule and his EC's.

i told him to appeal but he doesn't know what to say. maybe just ask for a re-evaluation or something?

also, his school is really competitive, that's why his gpa is kinda low.

oh no :( have him talk to his guidance counselor, if he won't do it, go talk to yours and tell her his stats and ask what he should do, then tell him. his guidance counselor should make some calls for him to the UC's.

p.s. if his grades have gone up since first semester, this will definitely help the appeal process.

San Diego is based purely on points so he should have gotten in. He should call San Diego and ask why he got rejected because it looks like he should have been well above the point cutoff for getting in.

No way his essays were stellar or he would be in. Only other things that could have gone wrong is that he did not take honors/APs.

zagat: he took a lot of ap's! he has full IB diploma, and for each IB class, he has to take the AP test too. his school is competitive and he took hard classes, that's why his gpa isn't that high.

grrrr

If his essays were good, they should have easily carried him into UCI and SB.

Wow, that's really not fair...

Even though affirmative action shouldn't be taking place by law, a lot of counselors know it is. At least that's what I've been told by my college counselor, and she said that it's the reason why every year, she tells seniors to emphasize what makes them different in their essays. UCs will say it's because the campuses need to be diversified and whatnot.

It's really not much consolation and I never meant it to be that way. It's really not fair that the process is getting way too ridiculous, but let's also remember that the people who did get in earned their spot, too. It's so unfair for him, though...

I hope your friend doesn't take his rejections too personally. There are a lot of colleges that would accept him. Did he call the admissions office of his top campuses to check what happened?

i told him to call, at least ucsd, since they tell you exactly what went wrong. but he doesn't feel like talking to anybody as of late... he's taking it pretty hard... i hope he can get through this.

wow... tell him to appeal.. .he really should've been accepted

on a side note my friend told me that last year he got rejected from a UC... and like 2 months later they sent him a letter saying they made a mistake and that he was actually accepted. but by then it was already too late cuz he already decided where he wanted to go

All you people whining about AA need to just accept the fact that people get rejected. The truth is that increasing the black population from 4% to 7% isn't going to have a significant effect on admission of other ethnic groups (and minority admissions to Berk, for example, has clearly gone down the past few years - dig up the data). Get over it, admissions get more competetive all around every year.

i dont know your friend. but maybe he was just like the other 15000 applicants. working hard and taking all those classes, im sure he was a great student, and athlete. but sometimes, they just want to add students who will STAND OUT. and perhaps he will. but him not willing to speak up, that shows a bit of his character, or he is just really depressed. i dont think its MUCH of a race thing. is he part of some lost tribe of the americas? if not, he is in the same boat as the rest of us.

PS. maybe he should have waited around like i did. see... god sent this really strong gust of wind which blew my folder into the accepted list.

"3.9 UC GPA" that probably really hurt him. IF you look at UC statisctics GPA is one of the most important factors last time i checked UCLA and UCB had a percentage in the 90's of 4.0<GPA. but then again its easier to blame on AA.

i'm not even talking about ucla, ucberkeley, or even ucsd.

we're talking uc irvine... i'm pretty sure he's way above the avg acceptee for uc irvine....

that doesn't make sense at all...even if he picked an impacted major he should have gotten into UCI and UCSB. is there any chance his essays would have ****ed someone off religiously, politcally, etc?

here are statistics from UC site
admit for % 4.0 or above , and amount of people accepted in that group
UCSD 76.7 9k
UCD 91
UCI 89.7 7k
UCB 47.9 6.5k
UCLA 43.9 7k

your friends GPA group admit rate, and ....
UCB 6.9 .5k>
UCLA 13.9 1k
UCSD 32.4 3.5k
UCI 71.7 4.5k

He had a decent to small(UCLA,UCB) chance but nowhere near certainty especially considering you dont know how well his essays were taken by admissions com.
