My daughter is a BME major in CASE. She went to her adviser asking if she could drop from a lab, as that lab is not going to count towards her credits anymore. (she dropped pre med) Adviser replied she can do that and asked her to go ahead and drop. My daughter tried dropping that class but system did not allow her and when she contacted undergrad admissions they said you have to send in a petition because last date is over by then to drop the classes. She went ahead and sent a petition and that was rejected. Now the adviser never took a moment to look at the dates before he advised her to drop out nor explained her the entire process of dropping out of a subject this late and how that would impact her grade. She had an "A" in that class she dropped. Also last year he misguided so many case students by not letting them know about a prerequisite they need to take before enrolling in a class and that heavily impacted "n" number of students grades in that subject. Now my daughter is asked to appeal to Provost. Donno what that means...and is that going to help her if she appeals? Help us out if anyone knows about the process and advise us if we should go ahead with the appealing process to provost.

Why is she contacting undergrad admissions? They usually work with students until students get to campus during move in - which is when undergrad studies takes over.

All of the deans have drop-in hours almost everyday and respond to emails pretty quickly so I recommend she just contact them. I had a similar issue before, just contacted the dean, and she fixed it within a couple of hours. I see no reason for the provost to be involved.

sorry , I meant undergraduate department -where she has sent her petition to withdraw from one of labs. According to them, she did not contact them in the deadline they specified and hence committee rejected her petition. Her BME adviser just said go and drop , which she did , but adviser never told her that there is a process and she needs to send a petition etc…he did not even check the deadlines …So when she could not do it online, she send an email to undergraduate department they asked her send a petition and that was rejected. Now adviser says go appeal to provost. I am just shocked why the BME adviser is so reckless and just says whatever comes to his head and does not spend some time in looking into her case. However can you let me know if there is any chance if she appeals. should she contact dean first and then if that does not work then appeal? thanks for the all the guidance you provide in advance

Hi,

Sorry haven’t logged in for a while.

Has she dropped by the dean’s office hours yet? I would recommend she just do that and the dean will resolve it immediately. I doubt she will have to go anywhere beyond an initial discussion with the dean. There must be a miscommunication between her and the advisor, as these issues rarely happen for the most part. Don’t worry too much about it.
